Old Chinese ivory figure of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, in a refined and elegant pose. The body is made out of one piece elephant ivory and finish in a term "cold painted ivory" meaning that the color is applied without any firing to fix and harden it. This method of coloring ivory dates back to the Ming times and was particularly popular in the 18th century. This is probably 19th century piece. This unusual carved ivory export cosmetic box is an early 19th century product. The hibiscus (or maybe peony) and its buds, leaves and branch were very carefully carved over the entire box. It is 3 ½” high and 4 ½” in diameter. It is in excellent condition.

From our Southeast Asia Collection, a very fine Burmese silver alms-style bowl, late 19th century, extremely well-executed in deep repousse technique with a continuous scene of thirteen figures depicting an episode from the Burmese Jataka Tales (previous lives of the Buddha), bordered on top by a row of maw-pan floral scrolls incorporating seven chin-thei (Burmese buddhist lions), and bordered on the bottom by a row of stylized acanthus leaves...

Hollow cast in coppery-bronze. Two similar images depict Buddha in “Earth touching” mudra. Both are heavy castings, having an even, dark brown patina and hollow interiors with old brown patina and light traces of verdigris. The backs of both pedestals are cast with a lopp just below the seated Buddha and these were used to secure these two smaller images to a larger altarpiece...
