Mask of the "Nuo" esoteric theater representing the character of Master Jiang, a respected professor. Polychrome wood, with animal hair under the nose and around the chin to represent mustache and beard. China, early 19th century. Height: 9 3/8" (24 cm). The Yoshidaya kiln was a short-lived venture, situated in Yamashiro, intended to revive earlier Kutani-style wares. The founding investor was Toyota Denuemon IV (aka Sekio, lived 1751-1827), a businessman who used the professional name Yoshidaya. He chose not to situate his kiln in Kutani because of the site's remote location, but his wares emulate the earlier Kutani wares in a variety of ways...

This is one of the best Shounai-Noren used in Shonai, Yamagata area for Edo period. As for the hemp of this item, a delicate thread spun by hand is used. The pattern is full of Chadougu which was popular in Shikoku. Chadougu is an instrument used at tea ceremony. The Chadougu design reached shounai by a goods-carrying merchant ship. A fine quality Kameyama-yaki auspicious Peach form, momogata, bowl delicately and painstakingly painted in the Chinese Literati style with Sansui scene for which the Kameyama kiln was renowned. The reverse decorated with auspicious Lotus motifs to the reverse and a small seal mark for the Kameyama kiln. A similar moulded dish with sprig decoration to the rim is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York (Accession number 93.3.453 and there dated 1820)...
