Flower arranging is one of the great arts that Japan has managed to take to ever greater heights of refinement over its long history. Here we have a classic example of a kake-hanaire (hanging flower vase) fashioned from bamboo by a lineage of craftsmen that started in 1578 with the first Kuroda Shogen...

A rare and nicely carved Huanghuali wood Guanyin statue made during the late 19th century to the first half of 20th century. Condition: good. There is an old crack(1-5/8" long, patched) on the back of the statue, please refer to photo #6. Height: 9 inches.

Very old small "korwar", or funeral altar, representing a human figure with a huge head, standing on a rounded base, legs half bent, and holding with both hands an elaborated openwork shield. Wood, with fine age patina. Indonesia, Papua Province, Cenderawasi Bay. Height: 23.7 cm. Strong abrasion due to age, old accidents, otherwise good condition.

Small statue of an ancestor or protecting deity, wearing a ceremonial cap, holding a sort of square box with both hands and standing on a rounded base. Wood, light brown patina. Indonesia, Moluccas Archipelago. Height: 13 1/2" (34 cm). Strong erosion and old accidents due to old age. Ex. Old French collection. A rare piece.

A very finely painted fencai/famille rose enamelled teapot.The poem on the reverse side reads - "fang sheng chi jia; xiang qin xiu pi" which can be translated - "Fragrance (of tea)formed between teeth and cheeks; the scent (of the tea) deeply affects heart and spleen (refreshes one deeply)". It is signed "nie xing she zou" - "made by Nie Xing Sheng" (b.1909; d.1981) - active 1916-1981. The base mark reads Jiang Xi Mei Shu Ci Chang - "Jiangxi Art Porcelain Factory"...

Among the Naga, the libation is a religious ritual to offer a drink (milk, alcohol, ...) to a deity. The Naga tribes are located in East India, district of Aranuchal Praddesh, these areas have remained in a great isolation until at the end of the 20 th century These horns come from large wild bovids "Bos frontalis" locally called "gayal or even "mithan"...

This shoulder bag was made and used by the Hmoung women of northern Thailand. It would carry all the traditional items which would have been commonly found in a woman's purse. The bag fabric was hand loomed from the indigenous plants and then embroidered using traditional cross-stitched with geometric patterns. Beads, silver ornaments and tiny pompoms are added for decorative enhancement of the bagface...

Clearly this a very early ghurra showing greatly achieved carving art combined with thick crusted patina and significant signs of wear. The sculpture motifs represent on both side of the ghurra a scene of churning, supported by an interlacing which could represent snakes which it is however difficult to formally identify as the deposit is important and hides the details. The front and back sides of the ghurra are symmetrical H 31 cm, , width 9.5 cm , Thickness 3 cm

Kashigata (wooden sweet mold) with double Kiku (chrysanthemum) motif, early 20th C., Japan. L.8.75"(22.5cm) x W.4.25"(10.5cm) x H.1.75"(4.5cm.) This mold has two chrysanthemum blossoms, a symbol of beauty and abundance in late fall and winter. On the side, the sweetmaker has written "an iri no natsume" (sweet red bean paste filled jujube) to indicate for which of type of sweet this mold was used...

Bashofu kimono hand-woven of ito-basho, which is a family of banana tree, for both wefts and warps. The brown stripe yarn and warp kasuri yarn are dyed with Sharinbai, a family of the rose tree. The small weft kasri yarn is dyed with Ryukyu ai, vegetable indigo in Okinawa. Bashofu has been woven in many islands in Okinawa from old days, for everyday kimono or work wear. Japanese Ginbari Cloisonne Vase from the Showa Period, circa 1930-1950s. Red body with plum blossoms on a branch. The red color used on the vase is known as, akasuke and is thought to be the most difficult color to produce and only the most skilled artisans can successfully produce its ruby red color. To create its color, gold is mixed with a glass like substance and is applied to the object and fired at a low temperature. It measures 5" tall, 1.25" opening, 2" base...

This is one of the original works of Tokisada Nakamura, who signs as Masatoshi in this miniature sculpture that depicts Oni, the little demon, crossing a river in the company of a Man and a Woman. The Oni is carrying a skull ended mast, and he is holding on to the woman's arm. The man is carrying, over his left shoulder, a large Mokugyo and a couple of giant lotus flowers. He is picking up his robe to prevent it from getting wet...

Silk meisen kimono with double kasuri apple and strawberry pattern on yellow ground. Kasuri pattern was dyed with stencil-resist-dye (katazome) for both weft and warp yarn (heiyo-kasuri). Generally in good condition but has some brownish stains and some in the lining too and the silk tape in the hem is a bit dirty. Mid 20th century. 126cm x 146cm

The Hmong women of Thailand would decorate their jackets with small rectangles of ornately embroidered collars. This collection of 6 such collars represents the tiny intricate stitches and range of techniques which use to be used. Collars such as these are rarely available on the market mow.

Collars range from 5.5 to 6 inches across and 3inches to 3.5 inches long.
