This is Indigo dye cotton tsutsugaki furoshiki textile of the Edo era(1800-1867). It is a very beautiful crane and a lucky design of the tortoises.It is a characteristic of tsutsugaki of the Edo era that the ear of the tortoise is expressed like a dragon. There is a thin stain. Antique Japanese stringed instrument called a koto, with a black lacquer box lined in fabric with floral motif and a cherry blossom crest in gilt lacquer on the lid. It is made from kiri wood (paulownia) and is covered in beautiful, intricate inlay of coral, mother of pearl, and shells in the forms of various flowers and birds. Antique Japanese iron sake server or sakatsugi. The body contains an image of a turtle, a symbol of longevity and used in festive and auspicious occasions. Next to the turtle, although hard to see, is a signature which reads Tosa no Kami Mitsusada, who was a painter from the Tosa School (1738-1806). Antique Japanese large cloisonne vase decorated with a blossoming white hydrangea. Detailed flower petals with pale blue gradated centers and large leaves are rendered with great naturalism and contrast dramatically with a very smooth rose/taupe background. A band just below the mouth of the vase is decorated with a tiny, subtle leaf motif. Silver wire used throughout.

This is a large doll, probably dated from Meiji to Taisho period, modeling a maiden from the Genroku era (1688-1703). Genroku culture which was the beginning of uprising power of the merchants in the Osaka area was glamorous and quite a contrast to the stiff culture of the samurai. Partially green lipstick that is shown on this doll became fashionable at the time. Her hair style is called Taka (high) Shimada or Bunkin Taka-Shimada.

A very large mask of heavily carved wood covered in black lacquer with golden eyes dating from the mid Edo period (18th century). There are minor losses to the lacquer on the cheeks and along the edges typical of age. It is 37.5 x 30 cm (14-1/2 x 12 inches) and is in overall fine condition.

Small serving dish of square, mokuzuke, of octagonal shape with two handles standing off the side. Thin light-colored stoneware covered with cream-colored glaze with fine crackle filled in the brown color from the foot to ¾ of the height. Kihara kiln of Kyushu region was operating during the transition times between the decline of Karatsu tea ceremonial ware and the raise of Shoki-Imari ware (approx. 1624-1671).

Rare item. Yazutsu (quiver) made of "koyori" which is twisted washi (Japanese handmade paper) strings. The crafts made of koyori and coated with urushi were called "Kami-Nagato" and they were popular handicrafts in Edo period, such as tabacco cases, bowls and sake containers in hyotan shape and so on.
