Antique pair of Japanese menuki. These small but detailed elements of a traditional samurai sword were originally made to hide the pins (mekugi) that hold the back end of the blade (tang) to the hilt (tsuka). Made in pairs, they were positioned on either side of the handle. These menuki are especially fine and depict two men, likely sages by their long hair. Probably they are the friends, Kanzan (the Zen poet) and Jittoku (a servant at a monastery)...

An antique Japanese Kotansu (personal chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite handles and Sakata lock plates. 5 drawers provide generous storage and organization. Constructed using straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails.

This is Meiji(1868-1912) benibana-dye yuzen cotton Child kimono. It is a design of flying pine, bamboo, plum tree, and crane and turtle. It is a design that acting is very good. Everything is drawn by the hand. There are several small holes in a thin stain and the skirt. However, the state is overall good. It is a gorgeous, beautiful child kimono. size:109cm x 100cm (43" x 39.4")

Early 19th century ebony netsuke of a shishi (Buddhist lion) sitting foursquare on a base, its head turned to the right. Like any dark object does not photograph well. Wonderful netsuke carved with confidence and great detail - see its alert face, bushy tail, well defined ribs and paws. Wonderful sense of volume, beautiful lustre unique to ebony. Height 1 5/16 inches.

This is a very fine pair of Japanese satsuma vases that stand just 4 1/4 inches tall. Attractive form, enamel colors and very fine details. They look like they have spent most of their lives stored in the box. One has the original sticker and both are signed. The signature looks a bit like the Kozan mark but we are not sure. Some of the larger flowers remind us of work seen on Bizan and Yabu pieces.

Antique Japanese hardwood cabinet with beautiful inlaid decoration of birds and nature scenes. Flying birds, birds in branches and at rest are depicted with great naturalism: morning doves with peonies, cranes flying through golden clouds, and egrets walking through water lilies. Early 19th century wooden netsuke of a snarling shishi (Buddhist lion) seated on a base. Wood is lacquered in Negoro style - golden lacquer over dark red/brown over black, so as it wears first red, then black and then wood start showing, thus adding yet another color to the piece. Very smart use of lacquering technique, wonderful depiction of its face, ribs and bushy tail, beautiful wear to the surface, really nice feel of age to the piece. Height 1.40 inches.

A Japanese thinly potted porcelain bowl that is decorated both inside and out with scenes of a Japanese village. The artist has detailed the houses, lake, boat, fisherman, people and a temple, and applied a beautiful gold border. The bowl measures about 2 1/2" high x 6" in diameter, and dates to the end of the Meiji Period. Magnificent, very rare wood Bugaku dance mask depicting the Dragon King, Ryo-o. Mounted on a round frame covered on silver leaf paper. Ca. 1820. The mask has a bristling moustache and beard, 4 teeth and a hanging moveable chin piece. The top has a dragon carved. All was lacquered. A similar mask is on exhibit at the British Museum. Living in Kyoto it is not uncommon to come across beautiful antique tea bowls, however, finding pieces that are in good condition, aesthetically compelling, and with all of the trappings that let you know they were cared for by a devoted cha-jin can be quite challenging. Antique Japanese theatre mask, skillfully hand-carved into the face of a tengu, or birdlike spirit, characterized by an usually long nose. Antique Japanese two section 6ft Mizuya (kitchen tansu) make with Hinoki (cedar) wood, with Keyaki (elm) burl panels. The top section has two sets of sliding doors, one with mesh, all with ornately carved panels across, the lower portion has eight small drawers with beautiful Keyaki burl.
