The centre of the dish with a table display of bonsai-like foliage. The curved cavetto with plant-filled lozenges against a blue ground.

The mark within the foot-rim was used at the Chokichidani kiln and the Old Kakiemon kiln in the period 1655 ~ 1670’s...

This is a gorgeous hagi-isho juban ( under kimono ) which is made of many kinds of silk such as plain silk with katazome ( stencil-dyeing ), silk crepe with itajime ( board-clamp-dyeing ) and katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) and shibori ( tie-dyeing ), wild silk and so on. This piece was exhibited in the show in Japan. It has thin cotton lining inside. Late Edo or early Meiji period ( ca. mid 19th C to early 20th C ). A truly unusual Japanese cloisonne tea caddy, circa Meiji period late 19th century. The colors are vivid and intense against a background of swirling wind motifs, captured artistically in each individual cloisonne cell, then off set against various pictured panels of flora and vine. A real visual treat for the serious collector of quality cloisonne. From our Japanese Collection, a very fine assembled pair of Fukagawa imari porcelain chargers, Meiji Period (1868-1912). The blue Koransha mark on the reverse dates these more specifically to circa 1875-1880. One charger depicts figures set against a field of tall bamboo grass executed in mostly gilt and blue, along with very subtle use of green, orange and pink, while the second charger depicts just the bamboo grass...

A pair of cobalt blue glazed Sake cups with hexagonal notched rims. Each cup is decorated in gilt with a pair of Hollander figures preforming martial exercises with Halberds. The cups date to around 1780 and the Meiwa era. The cups measure 7.5cm or 3 inches in diameter, and stand 5cm or 2 inches high, and are in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration, save for one minute rim frit to one of the cups. Japanese Antique Bronze Rabbit Sculpture in a natural form. It has a rich dark patina, and a wonderful alert presence. A classic Japanese image of a Rabbit, and a charming Meiji Period Bronze. circa 1890 - 1900. 6 inches, 15 cm height.

Exquisite pair of lacquered wood temple lotus offering stands in lotus motif. The Lotus is the penultimate buddhist symbal of purity. The base is a lotus with lotus flowers on the stem and lotus cup at the top. Minor lacquer wear but in fabulous condition for its Meiji Period C.1890 age. 12" tall and 6" wide.

This is a fabulous painting dated 1930 by Shirakura Niho enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ko-Ten-Bo-Setsu (Twilight Snow in the Bay). Viewing it one can hear the silence, the soft pattering of snow and the flap of wings as geese take flight in the distance. Shirakura Niho was from Niigata prefecture, so was a man who not only knew snow well, but was well known for his snowy landscapes...

A Japanese Arita lobed dish decorated with a dragon descending from clouds, grasping the pearl of wisdom. The back with a fuku mark. The dish dates from 1750~1790. A similar design to Chinese examples of the Yongzheng period.

Approximately 14 cm diameter. Perfect condition. A little kiln dross in the cloud.

Early Japanese antler netsuke of a Sennin; fine old patina; good condition

Antique Japanese set of 7 lotus leaves and blossoms. Carved of wood and lacquered gold. Made for a Buddhist temple altar, these leaves and blossoms symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. The individual parts of the lotus are carved separately then joined in an arrangement. Sold separately or together. Each comes fitted with a custom metal stand.

Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)

An antique Japanese Isho Tansu (kimono storage chest) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original bronze hardware and Oxblood red Urushi lacquer finish. Drawer lock plates have an unusual stylized insect-like incised design with fine stimple work accents and handles in the Warabite style. True dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails were used in the making of this chest.

The wood has some shrinkage and cracks from the Arizona dry climate...

Antique Japanese two-section Mastumoto tansu, made from sugi (cedar) wood with mokko (melon) handles mounted on elaborate handle backplates typical to the region, large round center lock plates with incised kiri leaf mon, or family crests. Very nice example of Meiji Period (1868-1912) Nezumi Shino Ware Chawan for Tea Ceremony. Shino pottery is produced in today's Gifu prefecture since 16th century and it is distinguished by thick white glazes, red marks and the surface of small holes. Distorted half cylinder shaped kutsugata tea bowl of light, unrefined Mino clay.

The expertly thrown body, heavily trimmed with a potters knife (hera) is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxid glaze inside and outside. Obviously due to a lack of manganese here it is more a dark brown, which is rare to find on Oribe chawans...

A large and deep porcelain charger, excellently potted, excellently decorated in an most beautiful cobalt blue with an Kraak-design. The base marked in underglaze blue. Japanese Arita ware, 17th century. Diameter: 39,6 cm. Condition: Perfect.

19th century wooden netsuke carved as seated Tanuki (badger) with its mouth wide open, beating with his paws on his extended belly as on a drum. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: he drums with his paws on his large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness...

This old Japanese hook would have been suspended over the hearth and used to hang cooking pots over the fire. Obviously used by a rural farm family, this pothook or jizai kagi would have been hung by a rope above the fireplace, and the hook has been "firepolished" from years of use.

An antique Japanese kuruma tansu coming from the Mikuni region. The tansu is fitted with iron fittings to retain the condition of the tansu and to protect the vulnerable areas of the chest. The tansu has two wooden bars to lock the drawers of the chest. The chest is made from keyaki wood. Age: 19th century. Size: height 48" width 28.75" length 53.25"

Antique Japanese Satsuma pottery group of three fu-dogs wrestling. Each of the three seems to be attacking another in this playful scene. A medium sized fu-dog lays with it's back on the ground, fending off the largest of the group who, in turn, has a smaller fu-dog biting his ear. The overall modeling gives off a feeling of whimsical turmoil and one can almost hear the playful snarls as they bite at each other's ears and toes. Kakemono (kakejiku), black ink (sumi-e) scroll painting on paper of a bamboo whose top is lost in the clouds evanescently. The power of the line, as traced by a single brushstroke, gives a strength synonymous with permanence in the face of the vagaries of time. Bamboo, a symbol of prosperity, is one of thte three auspicious plants, pine-bamboo-plum (shochikubai). Height approximately 2meter.

Small box and cover made of very thinly cut keyaki (Zelkova) wood, in oblong shape with rounded corners. The domed cover is decorated in black polished lacquer, black ishime lacquer, gold lacquer inlaid with small pieces of mother-of-pearl. An open folding fan wraps around the surface of the cover, continuing onto the sides, decorated with parting clouds, showing silhouettes of birds flying over waves.

Inside, the surface is covered in thin brown lacquer, allowing the wood grain to show. ...

Very attractive Japanese Yogi (bed comforter) with a pattern of chrysanthemums and scrolling vine, rice paste resist Katazome stencil dye. The cotton is not as thick as the other yogi.
