A long verse is incised into the side of this tea bowl by Otagaki Rengetsu. The poem reads:
Yorozuyo mo 10,000 ages
tae nu nagare to enduring the surge
shimetsu ran so well
sono kame no o no From Turtle Tail Mountain
yama no shitamizu. The water flows

Chinese Ming dynasty celadon dish decorated with "KILIN" motive. 25 cm diameter. Dish has been broken, on restorations (not missing part).

A mirror made of copper with wood stand which is one of "Sanshu-no-Jingi", the Three Imperial Regalia. In ancient time, all natural objects and phenomena were worshipped in Shinto, but three items such as mirror, jewel and sword are objects to be worshipped later. A mirror is often put in the shrine pavilion these days. This mirror is rather small, so it might have been put in a house shrine. In excellent condition with molded auspicious design with a crane, a turtle, pine trees and bamboos...

Silk crepe cloth with beautiful embroidery of wisteria motif which is one of the long sleeves (furisode). The ground cloth is white silk crepe (chirimen) and the embroidery threads are vegetable dye. It has kata-kanoko (stencil-dye pattern) imitating small shibori pattern named kanoko shibori. In excellent condition except for a light brownish line in the center. The first half of the 19th century (late Edo period). 35cm x 190cm

This is another rare offering as we have never seen anything like this piece before. The piece has a beautiful mix of butterflies and flowers with a gradation of tones throughout the body. It is not signed and likely could have be made by one of these artists, Hattori, Sosuke, or Kumeno. With the lid on, the jar stands 20 1/2 inches. Condition is very good but there are some slight firing flaws in the enamel, damage to an area near one of the feet and a side blemish to the enamel...

Brocade lined signed Japanese lidded basket circa 1910-1920 by Suzuki Gengensai (1891-1950). In beautiful condition (the silk brocade lining has deteriorated). Signed on the underside. A green glazed "celadon" ware vase with flattened pear-shaped body made in the Longquan kilns, Zhejiang province, circa 1450-1550, during the middle Ming dynasty. The shape is probably in imitation of ring handled bronze vessles of similar form which have been produced in China since the Yuan dynasty. There is moulded floral decoration to the body and a plantain leaf design around the neck...

Large Chinese Neolithic Machang Phase Painted Pottery Jar - Liuwan Type

This large pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It is relatively highly-fired and made from a pale yellowish-brown pottery. For its type it has quite a large flat base with the body flaring out towards the wide waist where there are two sturdy loop handles...

The Japanese Norimono Palanquin is completely covered in a rich chestnut woven bamboo. The roof has a slight curve and a section of the roof can lift up for entry. The sedan is trimmed in black lacquered wood in a double lined grid pattern contrasting with the woven material. The three outer window openings provide shade covering of reeded sudaris with black wool borders and copper mounts. The sudari is held erect with copper L-shaped hooks...

This is a classical form Song dynasty small longquan or celadon dish with moulded appliqué twin fish in the centre and an everted flatten rim. The dish is glazed with an uneven sea green or aquamarine glaze with crazing instead of the standard green colour.

There is no repair or restoration. Minor abrasion on the base and a small stone pits covered with the glaze near the cavetto which does not affect the aesthetic of the dish (picture 2 at 12 o’clock)...

Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese wooden kushi (hair comb) with brown and gold lacquer decoration and inlaid semiprecious green stone, design continuing onto the back. Beautifully made out of dense brown wood allowing for fine teeth, superb lacquering, wonderful work in Japanese taste, some losses as can be seen on photos. Length 3.32 inches.
