Very rare and exceptional Late Edo/Early Meiji Period C.1880 bronze buddhist temple lantern. Originally held a small dish for an oil lamp. Thick heavy bronze that has oxidized with time to produce a lovely blue/green patina. On tripod legs with fantastic vine motif on the main body panels. Hinges on door still work. Lost wax cast. 19th century boxwood netsuke of Thunder God Raiden standing on his drum that he tore open by beating it with a striker on the clouds. According to Japanese folklore by beating the drum Raiden creates thunder. The stretched leather part of the drum is lacquered in Negoro style: red lacquer over black, so as it wears the black starts showing. The bottom of the drum is carved as a seal, with a seal script reading HARUYOSHI (alternative reading is Shunko) in a reserve shaped like a mallet of Daikoku...

19th century boxwood netsuke of a blind masseuse working on a client. The masseur has a typical bump on his head, as is usual with portrayal of blind in netsuke. Wonderful carving with great faces, muscles of the client and excellent depiction of textile lines, rich warm patina. Signed NOBUFUSA on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 834 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1 1/8 inches.

This is a very fine set of Japanese Imari Nesting Bowls. It is rare to get a set of this quality in this fine of condition. These bowls are old and they are antiques. The largest bowl measures 10 inches across and 4 1/4 tall. The condition is excellent on all three.

18th century wooden netsuke of sumitori - a woven basket holding charcoal during tea ceremony - containing sumi (charcoal), and with haboki (feather brush for ashes) and hibashi (fire tongues) on top. The wood is kurogaki (black persimmon). Excellent strong early carving elegant in its simplicity, clever design in Japanese taste, beautiful patina. A brass magic bowl of deep rounded form with everted rim and raised omphalos. Incised allover with talismanic inscriptions, the exterior with the twelve Zodiac signs in cartouches. Dated AH 1209 / AD 1794 (see picture no. 8). Condition: everted rim with a small loss, some patina. Dimension: diameter: 16.1 cm, 4.5 cm high.

A elegant and luxurious cigarette set by Ikkakusai, Nagata Tomijiro. The work is a combination of silver, woven strips of wood, and lacquer. The exterior section of the lid has two fan shaped silver plates insets with traditional motifs of bamboo, lingzhi (reishi), and the sage jurojin. The box has a metal and glass ash tray, a compartment for a lighter, and below a drawer for extra cigarettes. Cigarettes became popular in Japan during the Taisho and early Showa Periods...

Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368~1615) 3-color glazed chests (or trunks). Part of the body of each piece shows an iridescent sheen. There are a few chips on both chests. They are 4 ½ inches tall, 5 ¼ inches long and 3 inches wide.

19th century netsuke of the famous warrior and statesman Takeshiuchi no Sukune cradling a boy on one hand, and a kneeling man with a sword and wearing a eboshi hat. The boy is the son of the Empress Jingo and is the future Emperor Ojin, to whose education Takeshiuchi devoted his later life. Superbly carved, great faces, elaborate hair and clothing arrangement and excellent textile patterns...

An antique Japanese bronze platter of mixed metals with silver. The image is of a masked swordsman. Bugaku court dance and music is the Japanese traditional dance that has been performed to select elites mostly in the Japanese imperial court, for over twelve hundred years. The dance is marked by its slow, precise and regal movements. The dancers wear intricate traditional Buddhist costumes which usually include striking masks. Gagaku is the court music that goes beside the Bugaku court dance...
