Watercolor painting of a blue-eyed dark haired younger man with long sideburns, seated in a chair, circa 1860's, possibly a bit earlier, apparently unsigned, 9" by 6 1/2" (12 1/4" by 10 1/4" framed). The drawing shows some evidence of 150 years of age, with some light surface scratches in a few spots, a circular discoloration on the paper at left wall, and a little other foxing/discoloration. Found in Florida. I would lean towards the work being of American, rather than English, origin.

An early 20th century pastel landscape of trees and a small creek at left, 20" by 27 1/2" as framed behind glass, no mat, signed at lower right by artist H. W. Carr. This was a period of great activity in pastel landscape painting; displaying original art in one's home, instead of a mere print, was considered a symbol of status. The frame is worn, with chipping.

A print I first thought could be Pennsylvania Dutch imagery, but which now appears to be of some European origin, perhaps the Appenzell area of Switzerland, or elsewhere in Europe. A Google search reveals that the imagery is actually used on the cover of a Spanish reader book, so perhaps this is a Spanish origin. Measurements are 17" by 13 1/2" framed. Condition is very good, with just some overall age toning of the paper and some light rumpling at bottom margin...

California watercolor landscape scene of a water tower above outbuildings in a tawny landscape, signed at lower left by artist Compton. The work measures 14" by 20" inside the present mat and 25" by 31" as framed in simple light wood, (no glass). The painting is in excellent condition despite the lack of glass. Mats are soiled and should be replaced. A well executed work squarely in the "California Style" of watercolor painting.

Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a traditionally-dressed woman, facing away from the viewer, balancing a water jug on her head while walking in a rural setting. The work measures 13" by 10" framed and there is no apparent signature. I opened the backing and see that the canvas has been laid directly on a board. Oil on canvas still life of flowers in a glass vase, painted in an impressionist hand, 24" by 20" (unframed), signed at lower right corner by artist "L. C. King" and dated there 1939. These flowers could be dahlias. The artist does not appear to be listed but he/she was talented. Frame in perhaps a dark silvery frame for best effect, to pick up on the silvery gray light. Extreme bottom edge has some abrasion from framing, leading to paint loss. There is a small puncture at far right in the ...

A watercolor painting of raspberries in a small wicker basket, signed at lower right center with what appears as "J. L. Guinand", and dated there 1895. The work could be by a French artist or perhaps by an American with a French name. I do not see a listing for such an artist. The work measures 7 1/4" by 11 1/2" and 17 3/4" by 21 3/4" framed. The paper is slightly puckered and there is a small unexplained blue area at far right edge that seems out of place. The frame is a bit tired with som...

An ORIGINAL mixed media color caricature drawing of iconic entertainer Madonna, 6 1/4" by 8 1/2" (11" by 13" in present silvery framing), signed at lower right by the obviously highly talented contemporary artist who goes by the fashionably anonymous moniker "14". The work is in pencil, gouache, and color crayon. Madonna is shown with colored blonde hair that extends out quite too far on both sides, and there is the suggestion of her being less-than-young. The artist is associated with the we...

A finely executed work, circa 1990, featuring a landscape with distinctive beautiful mallee trees (a type of eucalyptus), a number of sheep contentedly grazing among them, signed at lower right by listed Australian artist ALAN TREGENZA (1961-). The work measures 15" by 20 1/2" (24 1/2" by 30" framed). A copy of an old invoice affixed to the backing (including the title "Last Mallees on the XXXXX") shows the piece was purchased with a deposit given to a gallery, apparently the Kingston House G...

Oil on canvas painting of a landscape with trees, a lake and distant mountains, 11 3/4" by 15 3/4", unframed, signed at lower right "Ballon". The work is nicely painted and possibly of French origin. The age would be about circa 1960's/1970's. A standard 12" by 16" frame will make this wall-ready. The condition is excellent.

Etching on paper, 1923, measuring 9" by 13" (15" by 18 3/4" framed---no glass), titled "La Lagune--Venise" in pencil in lower right margin, signed in pencil at lower left margin and numbered there 80 from an edition of 100, by the important artist EDGAR CHAHINE (1874-1947). The influence of Whistler's similar graphic works and drawings featuring Venice is very obvious, what with the big sky and tiny silhouettes of the buildings on the horizon far away. Chahine also painted in oil and other medi...

Acquired as one of a number of works by late Bozeman, Montana artist MARION "MAL" LEWIS (1925-2010), this is a fine collage work, undated, titled "Moonlit Night" on original sticker, not framed (just matted), likely from late in the artist's life. While traveling through Montana I came upon a group of mostly collage, abstract works by this artist, though there is at least one non-abstract work, a New Mexico drawing, that I will be listing. This measures 10" by 18 3/4" inside the present mat. ...

Armin Landeck (American, 1905-1984) - York Avenue, Tenements. Original signed drypoint etching. Dated: 1938. Small Edition of 100. Signed and dated by the artist in pencil in lower margin. Armin Landeck was a noted American printmaker. Landeck attended Columbia University in New York, where he began printmaking. At the Art Students League, he studied under George Bridgman and later with the English printmaker Stanley William Hayter. During the 1930s, he produced many city views of New York. ...

Oil on canvas contemporary painting of a young woman in a sundress and stylish sun hat, on the deck of a ship, not signed. The work, 19 3/4" by 19 3/4", is unframed and unsigned. Condition is excellent overall, though I note two very light scuffs at right to the left of the lifesaver ring. A cute whimsical work for your wall.

A detailed gouache painting of two female and one male figure in a green landscape with trees and flowers, 9 1/2" by 7 1/2" (13 1/2" by 11 1/2" in gold framing), painted in the centuries-old traditional style of the Indo-Persian School, but contemporary. The condition is excellent and this is a very decorative piece. The amount of work involved to create such a detailed image is stupendous---though the market undervalues the handiwork.
