Oil on canvas laid on old board of a country landscape with an apple tree at left and a split rail fence surrounding a clearing, 14" by 21 3/4" (18" by 26 1/4" as framed), apparently unsigned, but dated 1885 in the lower right corner. I feel the painting could be by a listed artist but the painting is not talking. The predominating greens and browns and the old gold frame make for a Hudson River style painting...
William Morris Hunt, American, 1824-1879, lithograph, "Fortune Teller", 1875, image size: 7 1/2 x 7 7/16 inches, initialed in plate
William Lee Hankey, 1869-1952 British, "Meditation", etching, image size 8 3/4X7 1/4 inches, pencil signed, artists blindstamp
Fine early pencil drawing on wove paper, the subject a distant view of Windsor Castle and the Thames River (favorite subject of so many, many artists), signed at lower right "James M. Hart" and dated there 1855. This is a rather early work of JAMES MACDOUGAL HART (1828-1901) of later Hudson River School fame. Hart's major large scale landscape paintings have reached into six figures at auction, and sales in the tens of thousands are not unusual...

Lily Schierenberg Converse
This is a fine original lithograph by American artist Lily S. Converse. The subject is Ranchos Church, Taos, created and printed circa 1940. This pencil signed image measures 9 3/8X13 1/2 inches. It is numbered as 14/25 and came from the collection of Henry Emil Scherer. Printed on a medium weight wove type sheet. Two of her lithographs are in the collection of National Gallery of Art in Washington.
A fine color etching, "Park Avenue", circa 1929, by the noted Austro-Hungarian etcher, painter, and printmaker Luigi Kasimir (1881-1962). The scarce vintage print is in apparent excellent condition (not examined out of frame). Measurements are 17 3/4" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 26" by 19" framed. Kasimir is known today largely for his prints of street and city scenes in both Europe and America, rendered in fine detail, as color etchings, a process in which he was a pioneer...
From the 1964 Derriere Le Miroir #149, one of five original lithographs that appeared in that issue, with original center crease and reverse text in English and French, "Red Yellow Blue", by the famous Color Field and Hard-Edge modern artist ELLSWORTH KELLY (1923-2015). This print published in November 1964 by Maeght Editeur is in superb original condition, the colors rich and not light-struck. Measurements are 15" by 21 1/2" (21" by 28" in its present silver metal framing)...

Eighteenth Century Print “In Bridewell Beatling Hemp”, engraving by William Hogarth 13x16 inches
Albert Huie
1920-2010
Jamaican
This is a fine woodcut print by Jamaican artist Albert Huie. This image is hand signed in pencil and titled: Seaside. The image measures 9X6 1/2 inches. Albert Huie (1920-2010) was a seminal figure in the formation and development of a national Jamaican artistic identity, overcoming the hurdles of a colonial-based system of race and class distinctions to become the first native-born Jamaican artist to attain international renown and respect...
Oil on canvas painting of a marketplace in a Sumatran landscape, unframed, 15 3/4" by 21 1/2", signed at lower right by Indonesian impressionist artist MUSLIM SALEH (1927-). This signature was difficult to decipher but a little research on the net established the identity of the artist. He was born in West Sumatra and learned from Japanese painters during the World War II occupation years. Subsequently he participated in the Indonesian Revolution...
Oil on canvas painting of the modern day Shanghai waterfront, 28" by 32" (34" by 38" framed), signed at lower right by artist HUANG JIE and dated there 2002. This contemporary work shows the old classic buildings and the new distinctive tower and bridge in the distance, all painted in a meticulous and impressive highly impressionistic pointillist technique. I have looked for information on the talented artist but to date cannot pinpoint the artist...
Beautifully executed pastel in subtle white, gray and tan, this is an image of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre in snow, signed at lower left by artist R. A. Badenhop. I am unable to locate an artist of this name, despite the obvious quality of the work, which measures 20" by 16 1/2" (27" by 23 1/2" framed). The empty streets, teeming with tourists and visitors on more pleasant summer days, make for an unusual sight in this famous and crowded section of Paris...
Large oil on canvas, 52 1/2" by 37", unframed, the name "SERGEI BORISOV" on the canvas overlap, the subject a scene of Cold War era Russia. There is much going on in the image, which is an idealized urban, industrial landscape. The Russian is difficult to translate (I have been helped by a friend who reads Russian), even to a Russian speaker/reader, but the gist of what is being said is that the proletariat and workers must prevail all together to work for the Communist ideal...
This is a rarely encountered 1971 lithograph by the noted American Social Realist artist Raphael Soyer (1899-1987), the image measuring 13" by 11", the entire sheet of heavy paper 19" by 15". The work is signed in pencil at lower right and numbered 43/100 at lower left. Soyer, one of several brothers (the others being Isaac and Moses) who all became significant figures in American art during the WPA/Depression and mid century period, became known for his sensitive studies of human figures in ...
A fine mixed media study drawing in charcoal and white gouache of a soldier seemingly leaning against a wagon wheel, 10 1/4" by 7 5/8" inside the present mat (the sheet only very slightly larger), and 22 1/2" by 18 1/2" in gold frame with hand drawn lines), titled "Bataille de l'Alma"on the mat, signed with an impressed/embossed signature "I PILS" at lower right. The drawing features a scene from the Crimean War (1854). The artist, ISIDORE ALEXANDRE AUGUSTIN PILS (1813-1875) became known large...
Japanese Artist Tsukioka Kogyo (1866-1919 “Klyotsune” Colored woodblock 15x11”
Gouache on paper on board, 17 1/2" by 12 1/2" and 1 1/2" frame/mat, signed at lower right "MIZEN". This work has the feel of illustration art, and well it should as FREDERIC KIMBALL MIZEN (1888-1964) was a noted illustration artist, having done covers for the Saturday Evening Post. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators. Mizen studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was a student of the great Taos master Walter Ufer. Mizen's oils sell at major auctions. This work has some condit...
Original oil painting on panel by Paul Matthews (American, born 1933). In excellent condition and in its original gallery frame. Signed "Matthews" l.r. Also inscribed Paul Matthews verso. Still bears a gallery label from the Kiosk Gallery in Provincetown. This painting measures 29" by 16" in its frame (23" by 10" painting alone). Paul Matthews studied at the Cooper Union Art School in NYC in the fifties. He is widely exhibited (many solo shows including in prestigious venues like the Zabr...
At first glance this might appear to be a print, but it is not: it is an amazingly crafted quite large hyper-real watercolor painting, 29" by 19 3/4" inside the mat, 37 1/2" by 26" framed, signed at lower right by the artist, JAY RATHER. From my internet research, this appears to be a work by the son of Texas artist Herb Rather (1930-), who painted in a similar style, though the online reference mentions Jay as Herb's father, not his son. I am guessing that Jay is the son because the work doe...
A small etching 18th Century Rustic Figures title possibly from a book
Original etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving on copper by Wendell H. Black (American, 1919-1972), printed posthumously by Berkley Chappell (inscribed bottom right in pencil "Berk Chappell imp.") Titled and marked a/p in pencil l.l. Signed "Wendell H. Black '58 by Elaine" l.r. 18" by 24" image alone. In excellent original condition.
Truly old nineteenth century oil painting, 29" by 24 3/4" (32" by 27 3/4" framed), apparently unsigned, the subject probably Mary Magdalene, an extensive landscape visible at distant right. The painting's precise age is difficult to pinpoint, but mid 19th century would be close to the mark. No doubt it is a copy after an original Italian master work of the 16th century. The canvas as seen on the front is more coarse in appearance than the fine weave canvas seen on the reverse, leading me to t...
According to the Brooklyn Museum, which owns one of his watercolors, his dates are 1880-1940. He was a New England artist (Falk lists him with a Worcester MA address) with some of his paintings both signed and located. This large watercolor is attached to a stiff cardboard. The sight size is 12 ¾ by 22 ½. It is signed and dated in the lower left, “George J. Tribe 1910.” The scene is of a lonely farmhouse with a smoking chimney in an empty snowy treed landscape with the sun either just risi...
A white ink on tan paper line drawing of a young Polynesian woman, signed at lower left and dated there 1956, by the well-known, important Hawaiian modernist artist MADGE TENNENT (1889-1956). The work measures 12" by 9" and is currently unframed, protected just in a sleeve, the backing bearing a rubber stamp of Juniper Arts, Honolulu, Hawaii. Tennent was born in England and led a long and distinguished life in the fine arts. Educated in Cape Town, South Africa where her parents had moved, she...
A highly attractive, eye-catching contemporary lithograph for home or office, circa 1970's or 1980's, featuring black horses in profile in a very decorative design of white and bright pure yellow, 19 1/4" by 26 1/2" in side the mat, 27 1/2" by 34 1/2" framed, pencil signed at lower right and numbered LXI/CXXV (61/125), by the well-known and highly sought after French artist ANDRE BRASILIER (1929-). Brasilier is a familiar name to collectors in Europe, the United States, and Japan (especially po...
An oil on canvas painting, of two young girls, perhaps sisters, with rooster, 12" by 9", signed at lower right with the distinctive signature of well-listed Southwestern American artist VLADAN STIHA (1908-1992). Stiha was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia into an artistic family. He had art training at the Academy of Arts, Vienna, and also in Rome. When Yugoslavia was invaded during World War II, he applied for permission to move to the United States, but when that request was rejected, the artis...
Original impressionist oil painting on board attributed to Charles Rosen (American, 1878-1950). This painting measures 14" by 18", 19" by 23" in its period frame. It is not signed, but bears the inscription "Charles Rosen, Woodstock, NY" in the artist's handwriting on the back of the period frame. This painting was purchased from the estate of a long time collector of Woodstock artists (it had originally been purchased from a Woodstock gallery). It was exhibited in 2007 at the Woodstock Arti...
Large oil on canvas, 30" by 40" (34" by 44" framed), unsigned, in its vintage original frame, the subject a desert track through sandy scrub, distant purplish mountains filling the background. Though unsigned, the heavily impastoed, impressionistic style and the scene and colors used are unquestionably the work of JAMES MERRIAM (1880-1951). Merriam was born in Canada and was studying in Detroit, before arriving in Southern California. He traveled the Southwest and California, painting the des...
A fine unframed watercolor on heavy quality watercolor paper, the subject the famed mission bells at the 18th century Mission San Juan Capistrano in Southern California, titled on reverse label "El Campanario", 20 1/2" by 30", signed at lower right corner "R Folk NWS". The artist is ROGER FOLK, a longtime and familiar artist of great talent, active in the Southern California art scene. Folk according to information developed from the net, appears to be in his seventies. Since the early 1980's...
A rare prize for the specialist collector of Ohio art, this is an oil on canvas laid on board, the subject an impressionistic sketch of a patch of woodland in greens and browns, 8 5/8" by 11 1/2" plus narrow simple framing, signed in red at lower right "W. M. Darling". Darling is known today as the "Dean of Toledo Artists", a title earned after a lifetime of distinction in painting.
