An antique Japanese Choba Tansu (merchant chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods. Original wiped lacquer technique finish and hand made iron hardware. The lock knobs feature a Plum Blossom design and the design of the handles is a straight Gumbai. Sliding side by side doors open to a spacious area where once merchant books and records were stored.

A rare feature of this chest are the hidden compartments under the four bottom side by side drawers...

An ornate Victorian or early Art Nouveau period silver plated belt circa 1895 - 1900. This antique hand engraved 25-3/4" long belt consists of a two-part 2-3/4" wide ornate buckle with tongue and loop clasp, which is attached to fancy 1-1/4" across hand engraved panels linked with wire loops with small spacers. It is stamped EPNS with an FFE maker's mark in a shield and it can be shortened by the removal of some of the spacers...

Chinese 19th Century Glazed Stoneware Shipwreck Jar

Many years ago we bought a small group of jars of this type. We were told they dated to the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) and had been in storage, having several years earlier been recovered from a shipwreck off Thailand. To the base of each jar is written an inventory number (we were told around 200 of these jars were excavated but how accurate this is, we do not know)...

A brilliant set of 5 gentlemen from the Edo Period C.1850 by Kunisada I, one of the masters of the time. He was given the name Toyokuni III by his famous teacher Toyokuni in 1844. Fine detail and colors still very vivid. Framed in 3D out away from the surface would make a spectacular piece of art. H:28" x w:29". Ask for shipping quote.

Rather unusual late 19th century (late Qing Dynasty) Chinese wooden brush rest carved in a form of a stylized rectangular section bamboo stem terminating with a peach on one end and a pomegranate on the other. Very unusual feature of two tiny elongated drawers coming out of the sides of the brush rest - probably meant for storing small items like tiny brushes or inksticks. Light wood (some sort of pine) with very pleasant transparent red/brown shellac lacquer...

Pair of Victorian Classical sterling silver candlesticks. Made by Elkington & Co. in Birmingham 1894. Each: Tapering and fluted pillar on raised and square foot. Fluted socket with detachable bobeche on round and stepped foot. Bead, palmette, and leaf borders. Patera ornament. Fully marked. Very good condition with a few minor pings.

Gorgeous sterling silver soup ladle in the 1892 "Mazarin" pattern by Dominick & Haff. This ladle is in the large size. The handle is elegantly decorated with a gadrooned border that coordinates nicely with scrolled shoulders of the bowl. The back is hallmarked by Dominick & Haff and has the patent date.

Beautiful and Rare 19th Century Korean Elm Wood Document Box from Gyeongsangnam-do, with a patina and grain of gorgeous color and texture and lovely floral metalwork with plum blossoms (a symbol of courage because the plum blossoms early, before winter is quite finished) and chrysanthemum (a symbol of plenty or fertility because of its many petals). Japanese woodblock print depicting a beauty lighting a floor lamp titled “Kakinomoto no Hitomaro” (image no. 3) from the series “One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets” (Hyakunin-isshu Emyo) by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) published by Sanoya Kihei in 1844. The image is signed “Kunisada changing his name to Toyokuni II” with the red Toshidama seal below. The two cartouches in the shape of playing cards at the upper left hold a picture of a poet and his poem...

19th century Japanese small lacquered wood netsuke representing a theatrical mask of O-Beshimi. Uncommon image, excellent intense face, great patina. Crisp detailing, nicely lacquered, some wear to the surface. Signed RYUUN on the back bar - the artist is listed in NETSUKE MASKS by Raymond Bushell, p. 175, signatures 241-243. Height 1.07 inches.

There are a total of eight signs, each with a different "saying" having to do with well wishes. Due to the age of the calligraphy, and the vagueres of the old Chinese language, accurate translations have not been possible for each sign. A set of Burmese amulets in lacquered wood and gilded with gold leaf.
It is believed that this type of statuette had special powers due to the paste made from sacred ashes and medicinal herbs, which was inserted into the hole in the base of the statuette and carried by healers.

Victorian silver plated sugar tongs in the Gothic Revival taste. Each of the twisted sides is decorated with a woman (who looks curiously like a nun) holding a child, and an angel-like figure. The oval tips are gilt.
