Nice old carved hardwood box from the Shan State, Myanmar with traces of original lacquer. This was collected around 1988 in Northern Thailand, and originally dates to early the 20th century. Please note this is not a tourist piece artificially stressed to look old. The Shan have a strong shamanistic tradition which seems to blend well the local Buddhist religion, possibly this was used to house shaman paraphernalia...

Offered are two, very nice, circa 1915, smooth face, hickory shaft, golf clubs. Smooth face golf clubs fell out of fashion and perhaps function by the very early 1900s, but they were still offered in catalogues for a number of years beyond this date.

The 1st club is marked "FORGAN & SO.." and sports signs of honorable use and wear with faint pitting and has an original grip. The club has a straight shaft, an appealing patina and measures 38.5 inches from the top of the shaft to the heel...

A pair of Italian early 20th century alabaster Urn form table lamps. Each measuring about 16” in height with removable lids. The alabaster with natural veining., carved with beautiful floral motifs.

19th century lacquered netsuke of an actor in a role of a shojo with fan and a ladle. Shojo are mythical creatures living near the sea, and are particularly fond of sake. Great face, superb rendition of Noh theater robe with gold lacquer and iridescent mother of pearl, characteristic red lacquer hair, in excellent condition. 19th century lacquered boxwood netsuke of a recumbent goat, its head turned back and resting on its haunch. Excellent carving capturing the essence of the creature, wonderful depiction of its coat, eyes are inlaid with amber, excellent wear and patina.. Length 2.07 inches.

19th century wooden netsuke of two frogs frolicking on differently sized peony buds with stems. Wonderfull quality carving (see finely incised petals texture) carved, very beautiful warm patina. Signed GYOKUSEKI on the bottom - there is Gyokuseki listed on p. 428 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, but this is much better quality carving than his usual work, probably a different carver with the same name. Length 2 inches.

19th century wooden netsuke of a turtle with its head and limbs hidden inside the carapace. Elegant strong carving, wonderful rhythm to the sections of the carapace, beautiful depiction of the creature. Central plastron on the back is removable and has a hole at the lower tip that serves as himotoshi. Wonderful patina, very pleasant to handle. Length 1.6 inches.

Early 19th century wooden netsuke of a lotus pod with 2 seeds that can move inside their sockets. Great early carving, dark dense fruitwood, himotoshi (cord opening) formed by the stem of the pod. Beautiful mellow patina from handling, in great condition. Pod diameter 1.66 inches.

A lovely ancient Egyptian Scarab, c. 1070 or older, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 9/16” long (14 mm) and made of faience. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and to help it resurrect. Pictured on the bottom are images of vulture goddess Mut, and an Ankh. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup.

A Pair of rare TIBETAN Gilt Bronze Foo Dogs, (aka Lions) made as matching decorative pair both male and female incense burners measuring 9” in height and 12” length. From the Late eighteenth or Earl nineteenth century. Chinese guardian lions, or imperial guardian lions, are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament, but the origins lie deep in much older Indian Buddhist traditions. Typically made of stone, they are also known as stone lions or shishi (石獅; shíshī)...

A large rosewood, huanghuali brush pot, bitong of simple cylindrical form with thick walls and the base with an inset plug. The wood grain has particularly nice patterns, with a few 'ghost eyes', and a wonderful deep honey-brown patina. H 16 x 16,4 cm Diameter Late Ming/ early Qing Dynasty. Condition: good with a couple of chips at the lower part and thin hairline at the bottom.

Finely cast statue of Buddha, in monk's robes, sitting cross-legged on a double lotus throne, his hands in bhumisparsa mudra. The lotus throne is nicely sculpted partly in openwork, on its lower part. Bronze, with fine age patina. Burma, Ava Style, 18th century. Height: 13 cm. Very good condition. Provenance: old Dutch collection.
