This is a large ceramic pillow in the form of a cat, done in cream and brown colors, in old Cizhou Kiln style. The ceramic cat pillow measures about 13" long x 7" tall, and dates to the turn of the 20th Century. There is a Chinese "Cultural Properties" wax stamp on the cat's back. Many Chinese would "grind" a day's supply of ink in advance and store the liquid ink in a metal "inkbox". According to the calligraphy on the top of this inkbox, it was a gift in the year of the goat, to a medical inspector upon completion of his 3rd year of work in Yuncheng city, Shanxi province. The inkbox is 3 inches in diameter and has an dried ink in the bottom and a built in inkstone inside the lid.

Rare Large Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Glazed Buddhist Zodiac Jar

This very rare pottery jar was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279), or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) and has been been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province.

It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been coated in a green glaze that is very thin in places.

Around the waist of the jar have been applied twelve mouldings, the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac...

The rim is decorated with a facing Oceanus head showing bushy beards extending to both sides and goat-like ears. The lobster claws expected in the hair of Oceanus are mistakenly rendered as ram horns, the usual attribute for Zeus Ammon.
The Greeks believed Oceanus to be the titan of water, seas, lakes, rivers, oceans, streams and ponds. In the late Roman imagery of North Africa the head of Oceanus presides over displays of sea life.

Shallow bowl redware fragment showing a fierce lion with the head turned towards the viewer.
The finely modeled lion was taken from a separate mold and applied to the bowl. The procedure was characteristic of Roman North African ceramic workshops.
The motif may belong to the realm of Roman hunt scenes or relate to Christians thrown to the beasts like St. Thecla or Daniel. Apart from that the lion may represent Christ or Marcus the evangelist.

Smoothly trimmed by chisel for the stability of each bottom. Aesthetically grain is coming out as well. Solid make, with some scratches, cracks, stians, etc. due to aging as is.

The shallow dish with a roundel containing a very finely painted coiled dragon, Danryū mon, within a double circle.
