Fantastic Meiji Period c.1885 earthenware storage jar from Shigaraki, one of Japan's pottery and cermics centers In Edo (17th, 18th) and Meiji Period 1868-1912. Wood fired in a 'nobori gama' climbing kiln, the natural ash glazes produce startling textures and patterns. The Shigaraki clays have 'choseki' or white stone which means long life. Pair of 19th century Chinese porcelain bowls with custom stands. In excellent antique condition, the dishes each measure 8.25" long, 6" wide, and 2.75" high. Displayed on the stand, it measures 6 inches high. There is one tiny chip to the rim which, if you look carefully, you can see it in the last photo. One of the stands is missing a small piece of wood, but it does not affect the stability of the stand. Rare to find such an attractive set of bowls...
19th century wooden netsuke of a Buddhist monk arm wrestling with an oni on a huge lotus leaf. Wonderful subject, excellent carving with superb faces and great detailing of their limbs and fingers. Himotoshi is formed by the lotus stem on the bottom, beautiful patina. Signed RAKUSHI on the bottom - judging by the subject and the first character of the signature, the artist belonged to the Rakumin School and was obviously a master carver. Length 1 1/2 inches.

A wonderful patina lacquered Japanese black power container. Consisting of lacquered washi paper wooven tightly onto a natural gourd. The woven basketry work is detailed with the original attached stopper and copper lined interior neck.

Chinese antique Blanc de Chine figure of the warrior woman, Mulan. She is standing with one hand raised. She wears a wide rimmed hat and elaborate armor. The figure is delicately modeled in porcelain and finished with a clear glaze. The last two characters, of the the faint impressed seal on the back, read Yi Ren. Republic Period.

19th century netsuke carved as a Chinese sage holding an oni mask in his hands, and a little boy seated by his feet. Wonderful carving, excellent faces, superb staining, graceful flow of their robes and delicately incised textile patterns. Wonderful warm yellow patina, very pleasant finish to the surface, old age lines. Ancient Chinese small jade cloud form object. A carved coil of green jade with mottled orange opaque area. Likely a burial or ceremonial artifact. Hongshan culture was located in the Liao river basin in northeastern China.

Description:
A Longquan Li-type censer was in golden-greenish glaze.
Well mold in good profile, the censer was supported by three slender feet.
It was preserved nicely except one portion of glazing imperfection was found on the side.
Foggy and introspective sheen was yielded on the surface due to long time of age.
Date: S. Song/Yuan periods, 12th/13th century.

Sometimes assumed by Westerners as "medical models" these are Chinese fertility dolls. As ritual items, they rarely come onto the market. Used by several Chinese ethnic minority cultures, including the Miao, Yao and Naxi, the old fertility dolls were hand carved, anatomically correct and with pegged and jointed limbs. The hair styles and head gear would vary depending on the minority group...
Sutra book cover carved all over its surface with, in the center, a Bhaisajyaguru Buddha ("The Master of Healing") sitting on a lotus throne in a niche, and Tibetan characters on the rest of the surface. On one side, a monster head surrounded with floral designs is carved. Wood with fine dark-brown glossy patina and remnants of red pigments. Tibet, 15th century. Length: 53.5 cm. Erosion and chips, otherwise good condition.
