Chinese cloisonné and gilt bronze horned mythical animal from the late 19th century. The body is decorated with a colorful cloud pattern. The top, also a lid, is decorated with a blue, green, and gold hexagonal turtle shell pattern and two blue dragons on body. It has three pieces, the body, a fitted lid, and an inset piece. It measures 6" long, 6" tall.
Chinese 19th Century Glazed Stoneware Shipwreck Jar
Many years ago we bought a small group of jars of this type. We were told they dated to the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) and had been in storage, having several years earlier been recovered from a shipwreck off Thailand. To the base of each jar is written an inventory number (we were told around 200 of these jars were excavated but how accurate this is, we do not know)...

A marvelous oval shaped Chinese tortoise shell box with enameling featuring a bamboo and floral pattern with auspicious symbols on a carved top and the side bands. An interior mirror under the fitted lid shows some age related wear. The tortoise shell is in excellent antique condition, no cracks and there is no visible loss to the enamel. This is a rare treasure which displays beautifully. Measures 6 inches long, 5" wide, 1.5 inches high. Circa 1880.

19th century netsuke carved out of burl wood, its natural shape resembling reishi fungus (Fungus of Immortality, and with low relief carving of a snail on its top. Very clever piece, excellent carving of the mollusk and its shell. Signed on the stem ISHIKOKU (alternative reading is Sekitani). Himotoshi is formed by a natural branch on the bottom. Head of the fungus length 1.95 inches.
