This yatate, or traveler's pen case, is made of wrought brass, and has a long tube to hold the brush and a deep pot for the ink, which would have been saturated in a cotton wad. The lid snaps snugly over the pot to contain the ink, and a tab connected to the lid covers the end of the tube that contains the brush. Lava cameo brooch of Demeter (known to the Romans as Ceres) with a crown of wheat sheaves in her hair. A cup and deep saucer in the bamboo pattern with an early printed Spode mark on the cup. The transfer design was applied over glaze by the “pluck and dust” method of transferring color followed by hand painting of the gilding. The color is referred to in the Spode literature as, “chestnut brown,” though this one has a reddish tint. Saucer 5 ½ inches diameter, cup 2 inches tall.
Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Very minor gilding wear.
This is one of the more intriguing lacquer objects we have owned. Adorned with maki-e Aoe (hollyhock) Ka-mon on nashiji ground (also known as the Kamo Aoi as it was sacred to the Kamo shrine), family crest for prominent daimyo families including the Tokugawa and the Matsudaira during the Momoyama and Edo periods. Even the drawer pull is fashioned as an open worked shibuichi Aoe Ka-mon with the surprise of a textured, kinko (soft metal) raised backing only if you look for it...
A rare Meiping with thickly potted, attached to the body with three relief Dragon pursuit the pearl, covered overall with ivory white tint glazed. It's not easy to find a similar piece in the market, but I had seen a similar in brown glazed. Southern Song dynasty 12th/13th century, possibly Fujian wares. High: 19.6cm.
