This is a representation of Shotoku taishi (574 A.D.-622 A.D.), the young princely protector of Buddhism in Japan. At the age of twenty, he reorganized Japan by promoting Chinese Confucian and Buddhist principles. His well known "Constitution with 17 Articles" was the first written law of Japan. An armorer's tsuba, with very slightly raised rim on the strong, flat iron plate. Pierced decoration of a shrimp with pleasing, subtle swell along the antennae and legs (mostly on the ura.) Small, irregular brass inlays for the eyes (missing from one eye - not conspicuous.) The kogai-ana plugged with a copper rich alloy. Oval form about 2 7/8" (7.3 cm) by 2 3/4" (6.985 cm). Antique Chinese famille rose porcelain vase with a scene of a pair of birds over a field of lotus. A lotus leaf bends under the weight of the birds as they look through the field of lotus blossoms. The reverse bears an inscription of calligraphy. The base bears a red seal. It is attributed to Shi Yuchu. It measures 10" tall, 2.25" wide at the mouth, 2" 3/8" at base.
Antique Chinese yellow-orange peking glass bottle of a gourd form. One of its sides is painted with a robed scholar sitting besides a bird's cage over enamel picture. Attractive & massive stone Mortar and Pestle / millstone with ground stone, carved in Vulcanic rock and probably used for spices, perhaps with ritual purposes, Javanese hinduism in Indonesia, c. 9th.-11th. cent. AD.

Large bone doll with prominent head and segmented body. The round face with wide nose and slit mouth. The eyes drawn in ink and still faintly visible. The hair of the figure is piled up high and combed sideward.
Pierced at the chest level for fixation of separate arms which were bent forward at the elbow.
In the cavities remains of a light brown pigment that covered the piece.
These figures are often classified as dolls and may have served as inexpensive toys...

Song dynasty longquan celadon lotus bowl with lotus metals motif at the exterior, good condition with small shallow glaze chip at the exterior please see picture for detail, size: 15 cm diameter 6 cm height.
Corinthian black-figure aryballos with three warriors walking right. The helmeted hoplites carry spears and large round shields.
Cursory incisions for the helmets and the center of the shields, which show faint remains of applied red color.
The vase belongs to the ‘Group of the Round Shielded Warriors’.

Fine Chinese Ming Dynasty Painted Pottery Mandarin Tile
This attractive and very detailed pottery tile depicting a mandarin (Chinese official) was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It is made from a dense grey pottery. The mandarin wears a flowing robe, belted across his waist, with his badge of rank in the centre of his chest. In his left hand is what appears to be a hu (audience tablet) and in his right hand an object upon which appears to be a small animal...

A detailed antique Japanese usubata flower vase. The vase contains a raised figure of phoenix flying and the entire vase contains carvings of paulownia flowers. A historical example from Hongzhi reign (1488-1506) in Ming Dynasty. The censer decorated with under glazed cobalt painting depicting two figural scenes: "Worship the Moon" and "Carrying a Qin to Visit Friends". This censer used to be the collection of National Museum of Philippines, There is another identical one in the collection of National Museum of China in Beijing. Antique Japanese ceramic Oribe-ware fan-shaped dish. Glazed with a crackle white slip, deep olive-green and brown glaze and decorated with a pair of birds. Slab construction with fabric texture. Cut outs to suggest the ribs of the fan. Stands on three small loop feet. Signed and with tomobako.

This large Chinese scale has metal balance beams and shallow metal bowls. The scale fits into an ornately carved red and black lacquer wooden case which is slightly domed and has its original copper band closure.
There is some wood chip loss around what was the hole for the string which allowed the case to be hung up for storage.
Dating from the 1800's the braided cords which attach the shallow bowls to the metal balance beam appear to be replacement cords...

19th century shakudo Japanese sword tsuba with inlaid decoration of autumn grasses on both sides, all on finely textured ground. Shakudo (an alloy typically consisting of 96% copper and 4% gold) body, superb design perfectly capturing the mood of autumnal melancholy. Crisp work, black shakudo stems and gold seedheads, in excellent condition. Height 2 3/4 inches.
A rare early (female) Buddhist Guardian Lion painted with unevenly distributed crackular over glaze turquoise enamel. This item was probably made in China during the 17th or early 18th Century.
Condition: very good - there are many small under glaze firing cracks; there is glaze loss to both eyes and there is 'kiln grit' to the base. No chips or external cracks and no repairs or restoration.
