19th century netsuke of carved as a group of eels, elongated nuts and chestnuts, three of which contain deeply carved village scenes. Excellent carving with deep undercutting, eyes inlaid with brown horn, wonderful mellow patina. Signed GYOKUHO on the back of the eel that forms natural himotoshi - the artist is very well known for that kind of work and is discussed on p. 424 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Japanese dish or bowl, Ko-Kutani revival from the Meiji period, late 19th century. Enameled in purple, yellow and green with a wave-line border surrounding a motif of poets (?) and a weeping willow in a mountainous seascape. Dark brown rim, the back with Kutani mark in green. Diameter "8 ½ / 21.5 cm. Condition: the back with some rubbing marks and a glaze bubble (cf. pics).

Chawan, or tea bowl, for use in the the tea ceremony. Fine gray stoneware turned out rather thin of almost round shape, with a ‘soul’ in the bottom, standing on a bamboo shaped foot, a swirl inside the foot. Opaque yellow glaze with fine crackle covers the ceramic. Over the yellow a white slip hakeme brush stroke on the outside and on the inside.

This large scalloped-rim dish is painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a folk art “mingei” view of Mt. Fuji with pine trees and stylized sailboats on a lake. The painting is hastily brushed in the mingei manner, with a few cobalt drips here and there. It is raised on a low footring with the paste exposed, and six spur marks remain on the glazed base. It was used as a serving vessel for family or communed meals and retains some evidence of use. No repairs or cracks...

Japanese Seto Earthenware Tea Chaire, Tea Caddy with original Ivory Cap and Gold Foil inside, Ca. Edo Period, 1603-1868, 2 1/4" high include Ivory Cap 7/8" diameter-top rim, 1 1/4" Diameter-bottom rim, this beautiful old dark Brown glazed Tea Chaire or Tea Caddy kept original Ivory Cap, which is stained with dark brown tea between porous grains, some rough spot inside the top rim.

Antique Japanese 2-section futon tansu, made with chestnut wood frame, keyaki (elm) wood drawers and slider panels, sugi (cryptomeria) wood interior, iron hardware, top section has been converted into an entertainment center with shelves for components (can be removed if desired), small safe box compartment with key and two small drawers inside, Meiji Period (1868-1912). Size: 68" high x 68" wide x 30" deep.

Rectangular box for paper (Ryōshibako) decorated with birds and pine trees.

The lid presents a design mixing several techniques of lacquer work. This is visible with the three cranes represented in the middle of pine branches in gilded maki–e (a precious metallic varying density powdered sprayed onto a base or background of fresh lacquer) on a black background.

Rather unusual 19th century Asakusa school staghorn netsuke of a fly with spread wings on a folded leaf of a lotus plant with stem, root and 2 tiny bulbs by the bottom. For some reason flies are not common in netsuke. Superb design and excellent quality carving - see the elegant shape of the folded leaf with its veins and delicately incised wing patterns of the insect. 19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with metal top depicting Kyoyu - one of 7 Sages of the Bamboo Grove - seated among rocks by a waterfall and cleaning his right ear thus washing off the indecency of the suggestion for him to become an Emperor. Sometimes he is shown with his friend Sofu leading his ox away from the river several miles downstream from the waterfall, so it will not drink water tainted by indecency of the proposal...

19th century Japanese bronze tea ceremony hibashi (long metal chopsticks for handling charcoal in hibachi brazier) with finials in a form of heads of the Fungus of Immortality. These hibashi are for use in the summer time (winter ones have top half covered in wood). Finely made of bronze with high copper contents, beautiful casting and chiseling of the fungus, embossed areas at the working end for better handling of charcoals. Superb patina, beautiful wear, pleasantly heavy. Length 11 inches.

This is a finely carved 19th Century rectangular Manju netsuke depicting the Two Sennin kanzan and Jittoku, who are standing and holding a large ball. The two sennin are brothers, and are Usually Represented as juveniles with the faces of old age. Japanese okimono boxwood carving of Ashinaga and Tenaga. Old Japanese folklore tells that Tenaga (with his very long arms) would climb onto the back of Ashinaga (with his very long legs) and would work to catch fish together. Dates from Taisho Period c1920.

Japanese iron tetsubin, or tea kettle, with finely cast decoration of a bird seated on lifelike branches with berries in high relief. The handled and lid are made from bronze with a flower and orb shaped finial. The side of the tetsubin is signed with 4 character artist's mark.

A Fine Large Japanese Imari Bowl, Meiji, 19th Century.

A fine and substantial Arita Imari rinka bowl. Six panels, inside and out, are alternatively decorated with ho-o birds and flowers.

The centre of the bowl depicts the shochikubai, the three friends of winter. A suggestion of breaking waves can also be observed to the left of the screens.

This early 19th century painted pressed horn netsuke is 2” high, 1 1/5” wide and ¾” thick. It depicts a big headed smiling man. He is wearing a kimono and sandals and is carrying a mask of Otafuku on his back. It is in excellent condition.

DESCRIPTION: Outstanding Japanese porcelain Imari charger, circa 1880, acquired in Brussels, Belgium. This charger is profusely painted in under-glazed blue, red, green and gilt with a central blue medallion of scrolls highlighted in gilt. Surrounding the medallion is a wide border of alternating cartouches enclosing pairs of birds with bamboo leaves, and flowers issuing from rockwork with butterfly. The reverse is painted with three sets of flowering blue branches. Perfect condition, no cracks...

Antique Japanese solid Keyaki (Zelkova) hardwood Funa Tansu or ship safe chest. The front of the box has heavy iron plating with the number one (ichi) within a circle, motifs of reishi mushrooms, pine trees and flowers with heavy lock plate. This is a special old Japanese Imari bowl. The crane design and use of enamels is very attractive. The piece looks similar to some of the early Fukagawa pieces. Condition is very good and there is mainly wear to the gold trim on the top rim. This heavy bowl measures 7 inches across and stands 3 1/4 tall.
