This late 19th century Chinese hippopotamus tooth carving of a riverside landscape is 7 1/8” long, 1 ¾” high and 2” wide. The fitted carved hard wood stand is 8” long, 2 ¼” wide and 1 1/8” high. This is a set of woman's tobacco case and pipe case which are made of deer skin and has fine katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) komon pattern. The motif is pine needle. It has beautiful clasp of green bean motif which shows prominent craftsmanship in this age. The set also has a pipe, but it seems that it is not an original one as it is shorter than the case. 19th century. In good condition except for some patina. This silver box, of lobed medallion form, has a hinged lid decorated with geometric and floral repousse work in prominent relief. The sides are incised with floral elements with a caligraphic cartouche in the front. The base is also incised with a floral design surrounded by a band of small repeating triangles. The entire box is fashioned from solid sheet silver. There is some wear and light tarnish.

This is thick hemp Noren of the Meiji period. As for this, words are dyed with black dye. The words are written as Mensa. Probably I think this to be an item of the business to sell noodles. This has several places of thin stains, but does not stand out. The state is good.

Pair of matched naturally stressed wooden plaques with “couplet”, encouraging harmony and peace. Traditionally Chinese write to right to left so the meaning of the board on the right encourages one to “admit your mistakes to avoid trouble in the world” while the one on the left, encourages one to “be tolerant, to live in peace”.
