Splendid Chinese marble Moghul bowl with variety of gems inset in gold. The gems vary between beautiful and radiant ruby, emerald and sapphire. Decorated all over with a peony motif. Antique Chinese pair of lions, made all of gilt copper repouse and cloisonne, the female lion rests her paw on her young lion who is laying on it's back, the male lion has his paw resting on a ball with elaborately draped ribbons symbolizing the world, each lion has a bell hanging from around it's neck, the cloisonne work is extremely ornate with detailed patterns, birds and flowers, beautiful and dramatic, 19th century. Rather unusual zenibako where the fittings seen on the box are typically done in iron, the fittings of this zenibako are carved from the wooden pieces that are used for this box. The top section of the box contains the characters: Kin Senryo, or 1000 Ryo of Gold and underneath the lid is a lacquer decoration of a Tensho period gold coin. A traditional lock and key comes with the zenibako and a manju netsuke with an ojime decorated with images of mice. Age: late 19th to early 20th century...

A fine porcelain vase with two carps painted by Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842-1916). The vase comes with a tomobako inscribed, signed, and sealed by the artist. Kozan's family originally produced fine tea ceramics for the imperial court during the end of the Edo period. During the Meiji period, Kozan moved his kiln from Kyoto to Yokohama to produce export ware. Statue of Kubera, the God of Wealth and Prosperity, wearing diadem and formal attire, sitting on a dais. The god holds the Buddhist umbrella in his right hand, while he holds the mongoose that spits the jewels in his left hand. The statue is made of gilt copper, with a nice green and reddish patina in the recesses. Tibet, 18th century. Height: 4 7/8" (12,3 cm). Very good condition.

A late 18th or early 19th Century Famille Rose enamelled jar made in China, probably for export, during the reign of the Jiaqing emperor. For comparison (of enamels) we have pictured two export Lion Joss Stick Holders (usually dated either late Qianlong or Jiaqing, circa 1800) in our last enlargement.
