DESCRIPTION: A fine Chinese boxwood water-well basket toggle, intricately carved in an acorn shape with a realistic and detailed basket weave pattern with carved wood rim. The arched overhead handle has a free-carved wood ring attached; the interior is hollowed out. Excellent condition, a beautiful toggle, 19th C. For a similar example see: Schuyler Cammann, Substance and Symbol in Chinese Toggles, #188, p.228. DIMENSIONS: 1-3/4” high.

Early Ming dynasty ( Hongzhi to Chenghua ) blue and white bowl. Decorated with turtle - back desing outside, inside decorated with floral pattern design. D : 15 cm. Perfect condition !

19th century netsuke in kagamibuta (“mirror lid”) with cinnabar lacquer top carved with the character FUKU (fortune) among peony flowers. Essentially the netsuke is a wish for wealth. Very nice work, beautiful patina, compressed dust in crevices, nice old wooden bowl, with rotating peg that serves as himotoshi. Bowl diameter 1.72 inches.

Edo Period, ca. early 1800s

This yatate, or traveler's pen case, is made of wrought brass, and has a long tube to hold the brush and a deep pot for the ink, which would have been saturated in a cotton wad. The lid snaps snugly over the pot to contain the ink, and a tab connected to the lid covers the end of the tube that contains the brush. A logo is inscribed on the tab in the form of a hiragana ya beneath a roof-shaped mark...

Musha Ningyo of Shoki the Demon Queller, mid-19th Century late Edo early Meiji Period. An unusually large and early version holding a captured Oni (demon). This is a rare find for this subject. He is powerful and majestic. His face carved of wood with crystal eyes and massive beard and hair made of silk is a masterwork. He wears a Chinese cap and a robe with gorgeous, sumptuous brocades. A stunning Chinese porcelain Dayazhai-type jar grisaille painted with yellow ground. The monochromatic imagery of black and grey peonies against a yellow enamel ground scrolls around the body under a band of ruyi heads below a band of key-fret. With descriptive tag on the base "From the Hall of Embodied Harmony". There is also a Museum Porcelain Exhibition tag. The tag has some losses but shows that the Exhibition was in the 1960's - item #238...

First edition Japanese Meiji Period woodblock print titled "Pubic Reading (Yomitate)" from the series "The Calendar of Events in Edo Theater" co-designed by Adachi Ginko (1874-1897) and Torii Kiyosada (1844-1901). Three editions of this series are known. This print is from the first edition and contains the publisher's information and date of Meiji 30 (1897) 4th month in the left margin. Kiyosada's signature can be found on the billboard at the upper left...

This is a thinly potted tea cup depicting the Buddhist's eight auspicious signs which is found on the sole of Buddha's feet. They are the mystic knot, fish, wheel of the law, lotus, canopy, unbrella, conch shell and the jar. The tea cup stand on a short recessed foot-rim and into a U-shaped body and then with an everted mouth rim. On the cover of the tea cup, it is surrounded by the ruyi motive all around and four emblem of the auspicious signs...
