Fine Meiji Period (circa 1870) Bunraku Puppet of a Sambaso Dancer. This rare puppet is operated by three Puppet Masters, who make it come to life to present a magical theatrical experience. He is carved of wood and covered with Gofun. He wears a rich blue and red robe with white under robe, and his head is adorned with a gold and black velvet hat. An embroidery Crane graces his back. The bells on his feet sound when he dances. 35 inches (89cm) height.

This very fine Late 18th Century Ningyo was made for the Daimyo Class. These rare pieces are highly regarded in Japan. This is an unusually large Musha- Ningyo of the hero Kato Kiyomasa, who accompanied Hideyoshi on his campaign against Korea. He was famous for his bravery. He has a great face of carved wood and finely burnished Gofun, and is dressed in the sumptuous textiles of a rich green velvet coat with gold dragons...

A large, very well and thinly potted bowl. The exterior of the steep rounded sides finely incised with two striding five-clawed dragons in mutual pursuit of flaming pearls, and enamelled in yellow, aubergine, black and shades of green with three different kind of large fruit branches...

Late Edo Period Musha Ningyo of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. This wonderful example of high quality has an extraordinary presence, sumptuous brocades, gold lacquered armor, a spectacular helmet, and many other fine details. His face is gorgeously and masterfully carved with finely burnished gofun. Figure height: 20 inches (51cm), with arrows: 25 inches (63.5 cm). Excellent Condition.

This molded Chinese Qing Dynasty Jia Qing Period (1796~1820) export blue and white vase is 7 1/8” high, 3 ½” on the widest part and 2 ½” thick. It depicts an open mouthed dragon fish jumping out of the water. According to Chinese legend, if a fish (carp) can jump over the “Dragon Gate” in the Yellow River, it will turn into a dragon. The story has been used to encourage youngsters to reach their goals...

A good Yuan dynasty qingbai bluish white glaze dragon handled ewer with cover, pear shape body with raising up spout and dragon shape handle, ewer covered with bluish white glaze, found in east java. ewer is in good condition no chip, no crack, no restoration, very rare to find similar dragon ewer in this good condition. Size: 8.5 cm height.

The Japanese samurai dolls are part of the display used for Boy’s Day on every 5th of May in Japan. The dolls are the figures of historical heroes or legendary people to inspire the boys in the family (probably husbands are also included today) in their manliness and hopefully discipline and bravery to go with them. Samurai’s Yoroi armor, Kabuto helmet with swords, bow with arrows are popular items chosen today for the day.

In earlier days, people were more susceptible to natural disasters or diseases, and in order to keep evil spirits away, this day was spent giving offerings to God...

Many stories were written about the rising power of the samurai class in late 12th century Japan. Kanjincho, the Kabuki adaptation of the Noh play, Ataka, was first performed at the end of the Edo period in 1840. The costume and hat of this doll tell us that this is Togashi, a chief officer at Ataka inspection barrier in the Kabuki play, “Kanjincho”...

Japanese antique wonderful set of six puppet figures, known as oshi-e ningyo. The set includes a beautiful maiden, a samurai, a female attendant, a male official, Ebisu and Daikoku, figures are made of very thinly shaved layers of wood and paper with silk clothing and painted details, each figure is held by a stick and fitted with a stand (made later), the oshi-e ningyo were often made by households in Northeastern Japan and were made to celebrate girls day or as a prayer for happiness...

Extremely Rare Japanese Set of Five Military Band Musicians from the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. We knew of this one-of-a-kind complete set 15 years ago, and have finally just now been allowed to purchase it. These rare sets were produced only during the Russo-Japanese War, and you will likely never see another being offered. Japan used these Ningyo for the Boys Day Festival during this time in history. Heights range from 10.5 to 11.5 inches, 26.5 to 29 cm. Excellent Condition.

A nice Qianlong mark and period non-imperial 'minyao' bowl, potted sturdily with a bubbly light-greenish clear glaze and underglaze decorations in a deep true cobalt blue. The kind of floral scroll work seen on this bowl became very popular with domestic Chinese consumers during the mid-18th century.

A wedding plate finely painted with "famille rose" enamels against a pale green 'celadon' ground. The border is richly decorated with lotus, peony flowers, birds, insects, good luck symbols and auspicious objects. This item was made in China for export during the reign of either the Jiaqing or Daoguang emperors - probably circa 1800-1830.)Condition - there is a chip and associated 0.5 cm hairline to the rim and there is minor wear to the enamels. 7.75 inches(19.7cm) diameter.
