A Chinese polychrome cloisonne covered box. The flowers and stylized character decoration in cloisonne, raised above a textured, patinated background which was not enameled. A pair of icon fragments done on wood with extensive gold highlights. They are both from the same icon, which, I believe, depicted the Four Evangelists. The painting is of exceptional quality, as the photos will hopefully confirm. While I believe that they in fact date to the 17th century, I am conservatively dating them to the 19th or earlier. The panels measure 3-1/2" X 5-3/8" and 3-3/8" X 5-1/2", respectively. Rare and beautiful examples.

An antique Japanese Choba Tansu (merchant's chest) made of Keyaki Burl (Zelkova) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. 19th century netsuke of kagamibuta (mirror lid”) type with Shibayama inlay depicting a small bird (probably a sparrow) in flight chasing a single cherry blossom petal. This porcelain demitasse cup and saucer was produced in England by the Royal Cauldon Porcelain manufacturer around 1900. The saucer has a diameter of 4 ¾ inches and the cup is 1 ¾ inches high. A Scottish wood travelling tobacco or pipe box, wonderfully and fulsomely decorated with penwork. The scene on the top shows two older men arguing or bargaining, in front of what appear to be farm buildings. Under this is "And test Me nhow auld boy" followed by the initials HC. The sides and bottom of the box are decorated with finely drawn rows of leaves. The interior of the box is a gray sandpaper like material, with a stump in the center to tap out the dottle after a pipe has been smoked.

An Arita Export porcelain dish decorated with a design based on a Ming Chinese Kraak plate. A pair of Ho-o birds amongst flowers and bursting pomegranates. Arita, circa 1690 - 1720. A similar dish is illustrated in the Shibata Collection, Kyushu Ceramic Museum, item 2495.

The border pattern shows a striking similarity to that used for V.O.C. orders produced at the Hikeoba and Sarugawa kilns. Circa 1680.

A Japanese porcelain “100 Boys” plate, 18th century.

This unusual plate was made in Arita between 1720 and 1760. It shows a hall crammed with boys, an elevated youthful figure surrounded by attendants, two of which are carrying fans. To me it looks like the interior of a temple with children depicting the abbot and gathering of monks. Above the Abbot can be found a sign, Hyakushindo, “The Hall of 100 Children.” ( Baizitang in Chinese ).
