Measuring 18.5 x 28 cm when opened and 18.5 x 19.5 cm when closed, this pair of purses are from Katawaz in Paktika province, Afghanistan. Very rare, large lidded rattan basket from the Nung Rawang ethnic group of Northern Burma, Kachin State. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. The gold gilt vases are mirror image and each is decorated with a panel featuring a bird on a flowering branch; the opposing side having a panel with a butterfly hovering over flowers. BOWL #1 - Thickly potted with a thick slightly blue (Qingbai ?) glaze with a rolled rim. The glaze stopping short of the base revealing the white clay and the unglazed rim and base. No markings.

Size: Approximately 6-1/4" diameter by 2" high.

Condition: Bowl is slightly warped, but in otherwise good condition. No noticeable breaks or cracks, except those resulting from the kiln firing.

DESCRIPTION: An unusual netsuke featuring an abalone shell crafted from wavy burl wood with an ivory lobster perched on top.
