This is a finely carved Netsuke of a Group of Seals. The seals are arranged next to a tiered box. The knobs of the seals are carved as a Shishi, a reishi group, and a rock. One of the seals has a loose ring. One seals has been placed on top of the tiered box. All seals are engraved with red-stained characters. Netsuke measures 1.35 X 1.23 inches (3.4cm X 3.1cm), and 0.62 inches (1.6cm) tall. Unsigned. Netsuke is in excellent preserved contdition.

19th Century, finely Hand-Carved Netsuke depicting a Kappa, or Water Kami or deity, sitting while holding a catfish on her left hand. She is busy touching the depression on her head that holds water. In Japanese mythology, the kappa is a flesh-eating water imp who lives in river, lakes and ponds. They smell like fish, and they are normally depicted with the body of a turtle, an ape-like head, scaly limbs, long hair circling the skull, webbed feet and hands, and yellow-green skin...

Hupa basket, California, in large size and in beautiful condition, with open gallery edge at top, a woven foot that enables it to sit flat, the sides decorated with zig zag designs in cream color with dark edge on bottom band. Measures 10 7/8" on one side, 10 1/8" on the other and is roughly 4 3/4" high (a bit higher on one side than the other). The condition is remarkable, very little wear, no fading or losses, has been well cared for...

Ancient mask, beautifully carved in heavy wood, with realistic features, representing the face of a snarling tiger. Wood, with remnants of the handpainted polychrome decoration. India, Gujarat or Maharashtra, Kukana tribes, early 20th century. Height: 27 cm. The mask is nicely mounted on a custom stand. Old accident at lower jaw, very well restored locally. Acquired in 1974.
