The seal hemispheric, drilled through the top in a greenish-black stone with a high relief engraving of a 4-legged animal.

Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse (AD 618 - 906)

This pottery horse was made during the early part of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It stands upright with its head turned very slightly to its left. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery and is particularly "heavily-potted". Looking inside the body shows it was made in a two-piece mould. It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of a creamy-white pigment with details picked out in red and black pigments...

Early 19th century Japanese sword knife (kozuka) handle made of sentoku (alloy consisting of copper, zinc and tin) with inlaid scene of two birds on the riverbank by rocks, grasses and a woven rattan container with stones - such bundles were used for shoring riverbanks during floods. Excellent quality mixed metals inlays, wonderful crisp work. Some indents to the narrow sides from usage, otherwise in very good condition. Length 3 13/16 inches.

Deftly woven with very thin strips of bamboo then lacquered to strengthen and waterproof. The cord guides and knop are cleverly integral and remain complete and in good condition. Within the lid there is a maker's 'ruyi' mark in red lacquer. This set comprising of tobacco box, agate ojime and stag horn netsuke must have been brought back from Japan as a souvenir and perhaps kept in a cupboard, it is, except for some slight wear, in perfect condition. ...
