A set of old hanging ornaments for Buddhist temples or private settings. Decorated with gold leaves (genuine) over the lacquered wood and paper (small ornaments). The color of gold is soft, one or two strings are missing. The last photo shown here is Azabu Dai-Kannon in Chokoku-ji, Tokyo. Approx. length 15 inches long, Meiji period (1868-1912).

19th century marine netsuke depicting Ashinaga (long legs) wearing South Sea Islander’s sarong as he sits hugging his absurdly long legs. In Japanese legends he is often accompanied by Tenaga (long arms) whom he puts on his back and goes fishing. Very nice work, beautiful wear to staining, pleasant patina. Signed TOMOYUKI on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 1167 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1 3/4 inches.

19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with Shibayama inlay depicting Daikoku’s mallet surrounded by 9 tama (Precious Gems). The bowl is dark rosewood, the top is boxwood with carved loop on the back for the cord, materials used for inlay are black horn, silver, jadeite, pink coral and 3 different kinds of mother of pearl. Her delicate expression with lifelike detail, pierced nostrils and ears, and carefully incised hairs, her crown depicting the Amitabha Buddha, her flowing gown draped over her form, her hands clasped together holding a small vase with the elixir of life, the vessel tipped over so the waters may wash away the suffering of the mortal world. Japanese Buddhist scroll painting of Eight Armed Kannon , the bodhisattva of compassion, seated in a lotus position. In her other seven arms she holds a staff, a trident, a bow and arrows, a Dharma wheel, and other attributes with symbolic meaning.

Standing figures are arranged below the seated Kannon, each holding various offerings for the bodhisattva such as rice, sake, dumplings, silk fabrics, and other material objects...

A small twin-handled bronze censer, finely casted and with good patina. The base carries a rare two character seal script mark which reads "Cang Ju". It was probably made in the 17th Century, during the late Ming or early Qing dynasty. This item is from the collection of a British architect who was born in China and lived in Shanghai. A gun powder container (kayaku-ire) made of twisted paper string and urushi (lacquer) is painted. It is very sturdy and light-weight so that it was made to many living wares such as a bowl, a sake cup, jingasa (hat), tobacco pouch, trunk, etc. from Edo period. Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. The highlight of the piece is the very rare and exquisite square mouth and lid. The lid is adorned with a shishi lion which covers the hole the incense smoke wafts out of. Simply superb. 18th century netsuke of a kneeling boy wearing checkered jacket and a theatrical mask of a demon with his hands by his ears intent on listening. Strong early piece with wonderful wear and fantastic honey colored patina on the back where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono. Great vicious mask, wonderful textile pattern (worn in the middle of the back). Old loss to the tips of his fingers on the right hand...

This pair of marked Guang Xu Period (1875~1908) Famille Rose plates are 1 inch deep and 6 ¾ inches in diameter. They depict a long-tail bird and butterfly in a flower garden. The workmanship is wonderful. The gold edging has worn off slightly. There is one small hairline crack in one plate and an old repair in the other one.

Description: Fine antique Persian Brass bowl, late Quajar period, well designed with a decorated lid with fine engraved storks in different position surrounded with floral design. The craftsmanship is very impressing. Measurements: 1 1/4 inches high and 3 inches in diameter in good condition.

Circa 1850, rare Chinese Rose Mandarin serving dish in the shape of a pomegranate. In excellent antique condition with very little surface wear, it measures 6 inches x 5 inches.
