This is a finely hand-carved Ebony Netsuke attributed to Jikan Ganbun, depicting a Tree Stump. Nicely detailed rendering of a tree stump with its rough textured exterior contrasting with a smooth top and bottom that are styled in a star shaped manner. The concave stump is slightly hollowed out, with a smaller stump on its side. There is a tiny ant looking figure that has been carved inside the stump. Netsuke is unsigned. Antique Japanese tsuba (hand guard for samurai katana) decorated with a monkey peeking though the bamboo rails of a cage or gate. Often occurring in Japanese folk tales, the monkey generally symbolizes a trickster. Since tsuba were often a warrior's source of personal expression, it is likely this monkey held specific significance to the blade's owner.

Tibetan seated figure likely that of arhat Ajita, one of the 16 arhats. He is identified by two corresponding features; his hands which are resting in his lap in dhyanamudra (the gesture of mediation) and his covered head. His face is handsome (due to an accumulation of virtue) and his gaze is tranquil. Made of gilt copper repousse and with silver repousse over laid details. He sits on a lotus base and his facial features are painted.

A finely carved Suzhou school agate snuff bottle. Decoration of figures, picked out from natural colors of the stone, in landscape of hilly bluffs with overhanging pine and whispy cloud. Based on the gourd in the sash of the larger figure - possibly depicting the immortal, Le Tieguai. Nicely defined foot rim. The top rim with broad, just slightly concave surface. Very well hollowed. Pair of small Shiva lingam carved in dark marble. The first one, smaller, has part of its aureola missing. The other one is taller and more elaborate, with a double aureola and the Naga snake surmounting the lingam, and has small chips. India, early 19th century, maybe earlier. Heights: 6.7 and 9.3 cm.

Seated in meditation with open and compassionate heart, this bodhisattva is on a spiritual journey, postponing his own salvation in order to remain on earth to help others achieve enlightenment. In contrast to some images of the Japanese Bodhisattva (Bosatsu), often depicted as austere and inward looking, here, Kimura depicts the Bodhisattva as playful, carefree, and decidedly ornate. The inverted image of white contrast dye on black silk also makes for a striking composition.
