A small rectangular red lacquer signature in seal form is seen on the left margin of the painting. The base of the box is also signed by the artist in gold lacquer. A pair of Japanese lacquered braziers or hibachis decorated with motif of ferns produced by the noted Kyoto Lacquer firm, Nishimura Zohiko. Interestingly, the pair of hibachis might be made from two generations of Nishimura Zohiko. A Fukagawa porcelain 9 1/2 inch dinner plate. Iris decoration from Chuji Fukagawa's own 19th century design book. Blue underglaze and red, yellow and gold overglaze enamel decoration including random butterflys. Mt. Fuji mark inside the foot ring. Late Meiji or early Taisho. Good condition. A Japanese white glazed studio porcelain model of a water buffalo. Hirado type though the eyes are not left unglazed to the biscuit as is typical. Holding sculpted form and details well, the biscuit base smooth to the touch and bearing an imprint from the fabric it sat upon. Except for a clean break to one horn, in otherwise good condiiton. A line of separation of the glaze under the buffalo's neck due to "crawling" in the kiln. Length, about 14 inches horn tip to tail...

Japanese pair of round fish plates. The raised details of the fish is painted in blue glaze. Along the edges, an impressed pattern makes up the fish's dorsal and pectoral fins. On the bottom, the maker's mark is a tiny blue floret.

Unusual late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese kushi (hair comb) with buffalo horn teeth and silver frame with design of flying cranes on geometric background. Sharp metalwork with gold washes to the bodies of the birds, clever work in Japanese taste, nicely tarnished. Length 3.45 inches.

DESCRIPTION: A Japanese Imari porcelain dish, shaped in “double fish” form and decorated in traditional Imari colors with floral designs in rust red, and fish scales and fins in royal blue. The reverse has painted florals and grasses on the four sides. Late 19th/early 20th century, and in excellent condition with no chips or restorations. A large dish used for raw fish or shellfish (mukozuke) for the tea ceremony in which guests are served. It measures at 11.75” square x 2” high. This dish is designed in the traditional Japanese ascetic of simple brush strokes and relaxed design; such a dish was not intended for export and does not conform to the Western ascetic of gaudy and over crowded design. A true testament of genuine Japanese tradition. The plate dates to the late Meiji to early Tashio period (1900-20).

A Japanese lacquer bowed top box with portrait of a Kabuki actor - presumably named in gold lacquer and the role of Daihachi named in a lustrous iron color. All slightly raised work, the portrait is in gray, black, red, flesh tone, browns and gold. Lines including pattern and folds in the figure's attire and hair in his coiffure and sideburns cleanly defined with raised work. Metal along the facing edges of the top and bottom have no doubt contributed nicely to the preservation of the box...

A fabulous cabinet covered in polished black lacquer inlayed with mother of pearl designs in the style of Nagasaki containing various boxes, trays and dishes for an outing.
