19th century Japanese raku ceramic box for use in tea ceremony potted and painted to represent yuzu citron with leaves. Could serve as chaire (tea caddy for powdered tea) or kogo (box for incense). Wonderful hand potting, excellent depiction of fruit skin texture. Stamped with RAKU character on the body by the foot. Comes with newer kiriwood box and wrapping cloth. Very pleasant feel of age, well-used, in great condition. Diameter 3 1/4 inches, height with cover 2 5/8 inches.

An elegant and fine ink-stone (Shezhou, Anhui) made of carved, dark schist with minor, green-brown inclusions. One “eye.” Two small feet at top end. Fitted and finely carved lid of chicken wing wood (jichimu). The inscription reads: “A treasure from the Zhishi shanfang.” In a Japanese box from the 19th century (with full inscription). China: Qing, probably 18th cent. L 16,5 cm, W 11 cm. Condition: Excellent (small chip in ink-well).

19th century Japanese small lacquered wood netsuke representing a theatrical mask of Shishiguchi representing the spirit of shishi with characteristic tusks, most frequently used for the Noh play Shakkyo (The Stone Bridge). Crisp detailing, nicely lacquered, great patina. some wear to the surface. Signed RYUUN on the back bar - the artist is listed in NETSUKE MASKS by Raymond Bushell, p. 175, signatures 241-243. Height 1.21 inches.

Outstanding hair work, a distinguishing characteristic of this netsuke master. Wonderful natural himotoshi that is formed by the bending tail of the Tanuki over its right hind leg...

A Nyonya plate painted with auspicious symbols of a peach, peony and Buddha hand citron. Nyonya wares are over-glaze poly-chrome enameled porcelains made in Jingdezhen in the Kiangsi province of China for the Straits Chinese, or Babas, whose female counterparts are called Nyonyas, hence the term Nyonya ware. Nonya wares were mainly reserved for festive occasions and special functions. Size: W. 23.2cm. Condition: Normal wear.

The mid 19th century carved nut (tagua) netsuke is 1 ¾” long, 1 ¼” wide and 1 3/8” thick. It depicts a Shi Shi mask and an old man emerging from a cloth bag. There is an artist’s signature on the side. Aside from a few hair line cracks, it is in excellent condition.

A rare huanghuali wood Chinese "violin" called an erhu. The main body and neck are carved from a single piece of huanghuali wood, its top stretched with snake skin of beautiful patterning. The bottom of the main body has a sound hole with an openwork carving of a stylized "shou" character meaning longevity (this bottom panel is a separate piece of huanghuali)...

A rare and very finely carved gourd container with ivory cover, illustrated and inscribed with the "Peach Blossom Poem" from the famous story "Hong Lou Meng" (the "Dream of the Red Chamber"), dated - "made in the tenth month of the twenty-second year of the Guanxu" - 1897. The cover depicts a dragon amongst clouds in pursuit of a flaming pearl and is signed - "carved by Lu Shu Yi". Condition - there is a stabilized body crack to the gourd - no other damages and no losses...
