This is a rare Wan type chawan, around 400 years old in shape close to a tenmoku tea bowl. It is thrown on a wheel from coarse, unrefined iron bearing clay.
The grey ash glaze has been painted on the body with a straw brush as seen on Korean hakeme chawan. A stone in the wall has exploded in the fire - a very sought after effect ( see pic number 2 ), giving this type of Karatsu bowls its name: ishihaze (exploding stone)...

Extremely rare dish decorated in blue white, china late 18th century for export to Japan. The design is of high quality and the cobalt blue is perfectly fired. Deep blue color. The quality of the design is far superior to what we usually see on Chinese export porcelains and equals that of some imperial pieces. The decoration of the marli is particularly complex. The presence of 2 Japanese Mon allows us to think that it is a Japanese order. Probably a service for a wedding?

This is a traditional Antique Coptic Christian scroll from the Oromo people of Ethiopia.
Painted on Vellum (processed animal skin) and using a special black and red ink, the text is in the now extinct language of Ge'ez, which was originally used for religious purposes.
Kitabe scrolls were often placed in a leather case and were carried as amulet.
Unfortunately, this one does not have the carrying case...and some ink loss presumably from water exposure.
It is full length...roughly 4 i...
