The green is the traditional green of earlier Shigaraki ware, the blue as well, but a variety of brown, red, pink and black have been added to the palette. Japanese print entitled "Last Supper" by Sadao Watanbe. Sadao Watanabe (1913-1996) was part of the Mingi (folk art) movement in Japan which involved the use of natural materials. This mask or may be an effigie as the back is flat likely represnts a raktsatsa ( which means devil or bad spirit). Indeed this might not be a mask weared by people but rather an effigie posted on an entrance either a door or a window as the back is flat. A very rare 5 panel bride’s noren. The bottom of the curtain has a lovely delicate aqua wash. Traditionally the bride would hang this curtain in the doorway for about 2 weeks after she was married to announce that she was a member of the new family and that she has taken her husband’s family crest. There are a few minor age spots in the cream/off white area, but otherwise the curtain is in excellent condition...

White and blue porcelain incense burner. The boat is led by a young boy. The decoration of birds, flowers and waves is painted in cobalt blue hight-fired under glassure. No mark, Japanese Kyushu kilns work probably from Mikawachi (Hirado kilns, late 19th century.Meiji. Length.375mm. Good condition, some slight fired defects. An identical model but without the boatman (missing or broken?) is housed at the Los Angeles Museum (L.A.C.M.A).

Hashimoto was born off the coast of the Tottori Prefecture of Japan in 1899. He graduated from the College of Art in Tokyo in 1923 and continued his studies under Itaru Tanabe and Shod Hirata. Upon becoming good friends with Unichi Hiratsuka, he began to focus solely on colorful woodblock prints as his medium of choice....

Daruma standing tall, wrapped tightly in his garment, the tips of his feet just peeping out. The bottom section of his garment is flapping in the wind. This pose is associated with the episode in which Daruma travels to China, crossing the river Yangzi, while standing on a reed.
The figure was molded in a cast in two halves (front and back) and joined before firing. A hole in the back functions as a vent and prevents the statue from exploding while fired in the kiln.
