Antique Japanese marquetry box. The front consists of 6 small drawers of various sizes, each intricately inlaid with tessellated hardwood patterns. The sides and top are covered with larger sections framing smaller marquetry pattern bursts that echo those on the drawers.

A really rare type of chawan: wan shaped tea bowl with a rounded brim, made of light coarse clay. The fine iron bearing clay was nearly fully covered with glaze mixed from wood ash and feldspat.

The iron oxide in the body turned the glaze to a bright orange where thin. The bowl shows a fantastic discoloration from tea as a result of many years of careful use.

Chinese yellow soapstone scholar's seal. The stone is carved with scenes of sages and their attendant with landscape ground of mountains, pine trees, and bamboo. The reverse is also carved with a man seated at the edge of water, his finger pointing towards the mountains where a temple roof is partially unobscured. The seal on the base of the soapstone reads "a virtue should be praised".

Girl's kimono made of hand-spun cotton with flower motif which is Yuzen-zome (hand-painting). The ground cloth is benibana (safflower) dye. Benibana was grown in Yamagata prefecture in Edo period, and it was very precious. It was traded to Kyoto and dyed there for kosode kimono or others for women of a family of high-ranking samurai or merchants. Benibana dye has faded in upper back, but generally in good condition. This very unusual Kyoto ware chawan is decorated in underglaze blue on a buff stoneware body.

The motifs are very odd and present mysterious pictures a poetic calligraphy.

Inside are 5 spur marks indicating that these bowls were stacked inside each other in the kiln. A previous owner has obviously been very attached to the bowl as it has several fine "kintsugi" gold lacquer repairs.

The Teabowl was made in Edo Period at the end of the 18th. century...

Delicately potted and with a fine coloured glaze, this washer is fully glazed with three kiln-support marks to the foot. It is inlaid with floral decoartion to both the interior and exterior.
