This is a fine antique Japanese cloisonne vase with a midnight blue background and 11 flying sparrows. The birds are well done and there appears to be movement when looking at this piece. The vase looks great but it has a unique hard to see fill to a chip with a short line next to it(see the last image). The vase has not been sprayed. The vase stands 6 inches tall.

This is a great Japanese cloisonne vase signed by Hayashi Kodenji. It has a large 4 sided form and is prolifically decorated on all sides. The enamel just glows and the workmanship is spectacular. The scattered sparrows are all done in gold wire. Overall condition is excellent. There is a circular craze on one of the shoulders that is not easy to notice. It take very bright light to see it. I have seen and collected many bird celts and axe-gods over the years. This one ranks near the top for the type. The light, little coarse clay with enclosures is expertly thrown and full glazed - with the exception of the foot - with a transparent glaze of wood ash with some feldspar over a white engobe - in the style of Korean kohiki chawan (unglazed area on the outer wall is a typical feature found on many kohiki chawans).
