A rare 18th/19th Century carved agate snuff bottle with, possibly later, silver and rose quartz stopper. On the stopper is inscribed the Shanghai silversmiths "Wen Yuan" who are recorded as having traded from the Jiaqing (1796-1820) reign through until the Republic period (1912- 1949). Rare kinetic showstopper designed by Bent Gabrielsen while he worked for iconic Danish silversmith Hans Hansen. In textured sterling silver with a dangling disc that has a gold wash. Shallow form with brilliant turquoise color. The cavetto is molded with thirty-two chrysanthemum petal-form flutes that appear convex on the back-side of the dish and encircle the flattened base. A “China” mark is needle-incised on the base. Very good condition. Acquired 25 years ago in North Carolina from an estate that was involved with the tobacco trade in China. Sculpture of a long-nosed tanuki, walking with a hat on its back and a flask in its left paw. The piece is built around a large piece of root wood that comprises the torso, legs, the enlarged scrotum and tail. The head is a separate piece of root wood, the ears inserted. The sake flask is a small piece of root wood, and the hat is carved from a slab of a different wood species.

A fine and very rare bat-shaped porcelain censer with what are apparently bat head feet. We believe that there would originally have been a wood cover secured into the two outer holes and that the incense smoke would have escaped through the three central holes.

This item was made in China for the domestic market as a temple or home alter piece in the early 18th Century, probably during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722).

The central panels showing the title of the book in Burmese script. Approximately 280 pages, handwritten in black Burmese script, edges gilt.
