This is a finely carved Japanese Netsuke, made during the 1st Half of the 19th Century, depicting a Blind Oni reading a calligraphy long scroll with a girl. Well carved piece with character and some handling wear. Signed on the bottom Shoryu, a carver who worked during the 1st half of the 19th century, in Japan, according to George Lazarnick in his book 'Netsuke and Inro Artists and How to Read Their Signatures'. Netsuke measures 1.57 inches (4.0cm) wide, and 1.06 inches (2.7cm) tall.

It is a sashiko hanten from the Meiji era. All sashiko are hand-sashiko. It was made in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture during the Meiji era. The white thread is used to express indigo-dyed cotton-type dyeing with sashiko stitches. There is a little dirt. But it doesn't stand out. There is no damage. The condition is very good. The frog (kaeru) is associated with luck and wealth. Kaeru means both "frog" and "coming home" in Japanese. This extension of meaning is due to the ability of the frog to return each year to the pond of its birth. A gong in the shape of a frog can thus sometimes be used as a door hammer or to protect a house.

A large and ornate kiseru (tobacco pipe) dating from mid-to-late Edo. The metal fittings forming the ends of the pipe are engraved with detailed cherry blossoms and maple leaves being carried by the current of a stream. The bamboo tube connecting the fittings is in excellent condition and displays a soft warm luster. This piece is quite large as kiseru go—measuring 11.2 inches in length (28.5 cm). A FINE SONG DYNASTY POT WITH BLACK-BROWN GLAZE, 14TH CENTURY, CHINA. THE GLAZE ONLY COVERS ABOUT HALF OF THE POT, THE REMAINDER IS UNGLAZED. THIS POT WAS FOUND IN THE MUSI RIVER, CLOSE TO PALEMBANG CITY, WHICH WAS THE CAPITAL OF THE SRIVIJAYA KINGDOM AND WHICH HAD A VAST TRADE NETWORK WITH CHINA AND SIAM. OVERALL CONDITION VERY GOOD, ONE HARDLY NOTICEABLE, TINY INCONSEQUENTIAL CHIP ON THE TOP RIM. SIZE: HEIGHT 7.5 cm x 7 cm diameter.

Wan-shaped tea bowl made of light, little iron oxide bearing, sandy Karatsu clay, which is unrefined and has mane inclusions. The rim has been cut in the shape of a hissen (brush washer - the shape prevents a brush placed on the rim to roll off).

The thinly thrown body is covered with the typical transparent Karatsu type of ash glaze. Under the glaze is a decoration in iron oxide representing some foliage on the one side and a three dot mon of the Nakasato family.
