It is cast in high relief with the image of a landscape and plants.

An absolutely stunning Edo Period black Oribe tea bowl covered in thick, ink black glaze with a floral and abstract design.

The slightly irregular shaped kutsu-gata (shoe shaped) form settles easily into the palm of the hand, with the built up rim resting lightly on the fingers.

The tea bowl comes together with a good box with pouch (shifuku) and corner protections (hashira).

A beautiful Japanese cloisonne enamel tray by Namikawa Sosuke. The scene is a bird perched on a flowering branch. The grayish background changes in tone from the top to bottom. These bowls with matching inset lids are crafted from turn wood, and are lacquered black and red in the folk art tradition. They are intended for everyday use for soup and rice. Each has a kanji character painted in red lacquer on the lid and centers of the base. There is minor lacquer flaking here and there and usual evidence of use, but overall the condition is good. This is one of the best Shounai-Noren used in Shonai, Yamagata area for Edo period. As for the hemp of this item, a delicate thread spun by hand is used. The pattern is full of Chadougu which was popular in Shikoku. Chadougu is an instrument used at tea ceremony. The Chadougu design reached shounai by a goods-carrying merchant ship. The artist Fujita displayed cloth full of Chadougu in the atelier of Japan. There was the picture near a great painter without sense of incongruity...
