Antique Japanese wooden standing screen painted on both sides. One side is painted with a Kabuki actor portraying a samurai sharpening the points of an arrow on a whetstone. The image is inspired by an Edo Period woodblock print from the Kabuki drama Yanone Koro by the artist Kiyomitsu Torii II (1787-1868) entitled "Samurai Sharpening an Arrow" c. 1820. In this image, the artist has gone further to include a background with a rack of arrows behind of the main figure...

Rare early 20th century Yi or Bai minority lacquered box constructed from leather with the wall of the lid is bamboo. While there is some literature published on Yi lacquer there is nothing on the Bai. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan near Dali around 2000. I assume this is now an extinct craft no longer being done because of the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city...
Chinese porcelain blue and white cup, shaped in resemblance to a Tibetan butter lamp. Adorned with bold and complex designs of lotuses, scrolling vines, and eight Sanskrit characters along the outer sides. The interior design is of an eight petal flowering motif surrounded by double rings. The tall foot flares dramatically with a raised ring near the base of the cup, with motifs of draping pendants. Rare English Delft blue and white plate decorated with a chinese man in a landscape. Dated 1771. London probably Lambeth. Dia. 9" (22.8cm). Condition: good, with normal wear to rim. Two glaze flakes and a small chip (0.6cm)to rim. No cracks or restoration.
