19th century Japanese kiseruzutsu - tobacco pipe holder. The material of the object is polished branch of umimatsu - in Japanese it literally means SEA PINE, and describes species of black coral with dense texture, concentric growth rings, and amber colored inclusions in the black material. Very simple elegant shape, nicely fat and heavy, wonderful patina and sheen to the surface. Great dignified piece, unusual material, very pleasant to the touch. Length 8 5/8 inches.

Unusual Wood Tea Caddy or Tobacco Box in the form of a doghouse with brass nails and door surround and with a brass dog sitting outside. It opens by gently lowering the dog's hinged head which releases the peaked roof form lid which opens to a tin lined interior. The whole is mounted on a plinth base with brass beading. A rare and very finely carved gourd container with ivory cover, illustrated and inscribed with the "Peach Blossom Poem" from the famous story "Hong Lou Meng" (the "Dream of the Red Chamber"), dated - "made in the tenth month of the twenty-second year of the Guanxu" - 1897. The cover depicts a dragon amongst clouds in pursuit of a flaming pearl and is signed - "carved by Lu Shu Yi". Condition - there is a stabilized body crack to the gourd - no other damages and no losses...

There are a total of eight signs, each with a different "saying" having to do with well wishes. Due to the age of the calligraphy, and the vagueres of the old Chinese language, accurate translations have not been possible for each sign. This porcelain tea cup and saucer was produced in Germany by the Franziska Hirsch Dresden studio in the 1890s. The saucer has a diameter of 5 1/2 inches and the cup is 2 1/4 inches high. The saucer is scalloped and the cup is puffy and blown out with a flower handle. The ultra-delicate porcelain is finely hand painted with garlands of colorful flowers. Rare and very refined metal box, decorated with gold and silver hirazogan and takazogan inlays on a black background, pagodas in a mountainous landscape, cottages and bridge near a river in rippling shibuishi. The sides are enhanced with flower bouquets, crab and snail. Ryumin's signature is encrusted in a silver metal cartridge. Dimensions: 7.2 x 6 x H 2.5 cm.

An oversized plate (10 ½ inches (26.7 cm) diameter) with a hand painted bouquet of petunias in the center, surrounded by a thick gilt band and the elaborately molded lip with the molding picked out in gold. The printed blue KPM mark on the bottom was used during the years 1847 to 1849. There is also an incised Roman numeral four and possibly the number 14. It was probably used as a serving plate for pastry or cake.

This rare tortoise shell carved RuYi (scepter) is a mid-19th century product. It is 13 ½” long and 3 1/2” wide from the widest part (head of the scepter). There are fourteen cranes carved in relief flying in coiled lucky clouds. The pattern repeats and covers the entire handle and head. It is in excellent condition. More photos are available.

This is a beautiful early Japanese satsuma vase. It is made in the style and quality of mercury/gold fired Meizan pieces, except it stands 18 inches tall. It also features a basket weave design and extensive enamel work. It's unsigned and a very heavy piece. The bottom edge is rough so a stand or protection will be needed to keep it from scratching surfaces. This rare piece belongs in a museum.

Antique Japanese suzuribako (calligraphy writing box) for a merchant. Made of keyaki (elm) wood burl with iron hardware. Two drawers: one for writing implements and one drawer with a lock for keeping money, seals, and important documents safe. A top compartment with a hinged lid would have kept an ink stone.

Chinese Qing dynasty rectangular form hardwood stand with four inward curving legs resting upon small balls. The stand is carved on the curved apron with vines and lingzhi fungus.
