These 3 small oil lamps were brought back to the US by a Baptist missionary who lived and traveled extensively throughout China. Oil lamps like these were used for light source extensively throughout rural China by poor peasants. It is made of fine natural stone and has a nice patina. This mounted statue is part of the Van Norten Collection since 60 years and has been exhibited in our private house since then. Wonderful, age related condition.

An interesting Chinese porcelain spoon heavily decorated in bright famille rose enamels, principally blue, green and puce inset with an Urdu inscription to the centre of the bowl indicating that it formed part of a service made for the Nawab Feizsalar and Begum Sahibe in 1824. Shop mark to the underside of the bowl in underglaze blue. In good condition, some minute rim frits, no cracks, chips or restoration. It measures 11.7cm in length.

A ribbed form bowl decorated in Gold Imari style with an elaborate ground of auspicious kikko-mon containing karahana linked by karakusa with green enamel Peach leaves arranged in the form of a crosses. An unusual rectangular small Koro, Incense burner, decorated in under-glaze blue, iron red and gilding set upon four small feet. Each side of the censer is decorated with bands of diaper brocade inset with rectangular panels containing stylised arabesques set against an iron red ground. The square end panels suggesting a Taotie mask. The koro is of slab construction with applied moulded feet. It measures 8cm long and 6.7cm wide and stands 7.5cm high...

A simple yet refined bamboo sago or a scoop used to gather tea leaves from the tea jar. The top contains a carving of scholar rocks set among small bamboo and a small tree with slight foliage. The inscription on the top right, (Japanese: Gakusoka, Chinese: Xuesu jia) refers to a person who upholds or revives knowledge or education. A small metel bound six drawer black lacquered cabinet finely painted in gold lacquer . Three drawers are decorated with a branch of flowering prunus blossom and the large drawer and door are each painted with a single duck amongst reeds and iris. These old Chinese tinted eyeglasses date from the Qing Dynasty. There is a tiny bat on the nose bridge, and ornately detailed hinged temple and ear pieces.

Head of a lohan (or "arhat"), one of the 18 disciples of Buddha, wearing mustache and goatee, his face displaying a severe expression. Wood, with remnants of the original plastering (used to support a former polychrome painting, now gone), Eyes made of black glass. China, early 18th century, probably earlier. Height: 12" (30 cm).
