This early 20th century Chinese export cloisonné box is 4 ¾ inches long, 3 inches wide and 1 ¾ inches tall. It depicts yellow stylized lucky bats over a black background. Aside from a few small scratches due to the age, it is in great condition.

This hand made 19th century Chinese sterling silver cart is 2 ¾ inches long, 1 ¼ inches wide and 2 inches high. It depicts a man with a straw hat pulling a two wheel cart. A business man is sitting on the cart. It has “LC & CO” and “Mian An, Lian Zhang” (in Chinese) stamped on the back of the cart. It has nice patina and is in excellent condition.

This peach shape 19th century cinnabar box is 4 inches high and 8 inches wide. The carved scene depicts one person riding a horse and two other people on foot in the foreground. The background is composed of pine trees, brush and rocks. The sides are decorated with a textile pattern. There are a few old repairs and some chips on the bottom. It is still in pretty good condition.

The Japanese samurai dolls are part of the display used for Boy’s Day on every 5th of May in Japan. The dolls are the figures of historical heroes or legendary people to inspire the boys in the family (probably husbands are also included today) in their manliness and hopefully discipline and bravery to go with them. Samurai’s Yoroi armor, Kabuto helmet with swords, bow with arrows are popular items chosen today for the day.

These mid 19th century Chinese carved wood statues are around 12 inches high, 8 inches wide and 5 inches deep. They depict two young men sitting on a Qi Lin (or Qi Ren). Their arms are raised up and they are holding gold ingots. Both Qi Lin have a loose ball in their mouths. The workmanship is great, especially the detail of the Qi lin’s faces. Aside from slightly worn colors and portions of the statues are missing due to age, they are in good condition.

This late Meiji (1868~1911) 3 piece calligraphy lacquer box is 7 ¾ inches long, 6 ¾ inches wide and 1 ¾ inches high. The outside of the cover depicts an open winged eagle resting on a stand; autumn flowers and plants before a full moon appear inside. There are two movable pieces decorated with gold maple leaves in the box. Roof tile with a "tomoe-mon", a crest of circular repeating commas in a whirlpool pattern. Fired clay, 19th century. Diameter: 4", Width: 3/4". The round tiles such as this line the bottom roof line, above the eaves. Commonly, the crest of the family or temple was depicted on these tiles. Historically, a center of roof tile production was the town of Ogi, in west-central Japan.

This early 20th century Chinese export lacquer cinnabar bowl is 3 ½” high and 6 ¾” in diameter. It depicts two dragons flying through the clouds chasing a flaming globe. There is an honorable Qian Long mark on the bottom. Aside from some cracks inside the bowl due to age, it is in great condition.

There is no Maruhei label label on the box but we are pretty sure that this was made by the Maruhei in Kyoto. Waraji (straw sandal) Gata (mold). This mold was used to make the straw sandals worn by farmers. It is of solid carved wood. L. 50cm(19.75") x H.9cm(3.5") x W.9cm(3.5"). Acquired in Yamagata Prefecture in NE Japan (Tohoku), this piece exhibits the wonderful folk qualities of the region. Hung vertically, the "shelf" portion of the mold can hold a small flower vase, creating a lovely "wabi" arrangement for the tokonoma.

Jizo is one of the most beloved Buddhist Boddhisatva in Japan as a guardian of children and travellers. Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture was once ringed with Jizo statues, and its granite quarries made it a center of religious statue production and sales. This Jizo holds his hands in front of his chest in prayer, or in the traditional Indian greeting of "namaste." His face is well worn from the elements and time, but a faint smile seems to grace his lips. H.25cm(10") x W.13cm(5").

The region of Ogi in west-central Japan was a well-known center of roof tile prodcution, and continues this trade today.

Sakiori, or "rag weave", was a necessity of many common people in old Japan, especially those of the NE Japan (Tohoku region) which was known for its harsh climate and living conditions. Indigo dyed (aizome) cotton "yutan", or covering cloth, stencil dyed with family crest of pine boughs flanking a "koto bashira", the bridge of a koto musical instrument. Chi Un-Yong (Pack Ryon) (1852-1935): A Poet sage under the Willow tree with Poem: His pen name is Pack Ryon. Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, fine Japanese style mounting with silk brocade, 51” by 14”, signed Pack Ryon with three seals. It’s in fine condition except for few stain. This quilt is made out of an old Japanese nobori banner probably from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The upper part of the banner, where the family crest (Mon) is dyed, was used for the border and two figures were sewn together side by side. The brown fabrics on each side of the design are the reverse side of an old obi sash. All hand-sewn except for the straight line where the panels were put together.

Imari ware porcelain soba choko (soba noodle dipping cups) from the mid-Edo Period (1600-1868.) H.5.5cm(2.2") Dia.7cm(2.6".) This pair features underglaze cobalt blue pattern with two of the three friends of winter; pine and plum (the other being bamboo,) front and back of each cup. Abbreviated brushstrokes give these cups an aesthetic of simple beauty. Toushin (wick) zara (plate) held a small amount of oil with a coiled wick, and was usually set in some sort of lamp arrangement. These were used until the advent of glass and other lamps. This example of fine folk pottery is from central Japan, likely Mino ware, produced during the Edo (1600-1868) Era. The top side has a warm yellow glaze, and the underside is unglazed. Tea leaf storage jars used in Japan like this were produced in and out of Japan from about the 15th century onwards. I wish I could say that this is one of the famous Muromachi Era "nanban" wares from the Phillipines or Southern China that are so prized by Japanese tea ware collectors, but it is one of the replica items made up through the Meiji Era in Seto, Japan. This water jar, "mizugame," stands 60cm (23.5") high with a mouth diameter of 55cm (21.5".) The rich brown glaze is decorated front and back with freely poured ladle splashes of black slip. A band of 5 incised lines runs about 7cm below the rim of the jar. The decoration is similar to Tamba wares at first glance, but a look at the unglazed bottom reveals not the red clay of Tamba, but a yellowish-light brown clay from Seto or elsewhere. A beautiful hand painted Uchikake kimono with pine trees and rocks in sumi-e black ink (dye) style, a symbol of winter, New Year and the longevity. The fabric is Shioze silk (thicker than regular silk), not shiney as satin silk. Very well preserved; no stains. It is evenly discolored to a creamy color and still wearable. Circa, late Meiji to early Showa, 1900 to 1940.
