This is a kagura costume made in the Tohoku region during the Meiji period. Kagura is a dance dedicated to the gods. Several types of pigments are used to paint this item. They are gold, green, bengara-red, yellow, white, brown and black. After first being dyed in beautiful indigo by Tsutsugaki, the painting is then painted freehand using pigments. This late 18th century South East Asian brown and olive pottery water dropper was made to look like a water buffalo. It is 2 ¼ inches tall and 2 ½ inches wide. The dark olive green glaze covers the entire body but the bottom. It is in good condition except for a few small chips.

This is a fine antique Japanese cloisonne vase with a midnight blue background and 11 flying sparrows. The birds are well done and there appears to be movement when looking at this piece. The vase looks great but it has a unique hard to see fill to a chip with a short line next to it(see the last image). The vase has not been sprayed. The vase stands 6 inches tall.

A circular shaped album leaf painting done on silk of a peony. The work contains an inscription, signature and seal of an artist named Xu Zhiping. The work and style appear similar to examples seen in China during the mid to late Qing Dynasty. Age: 19th century Size: Length 23.5" Width 14.2"

This is an Early 19th Century excellently carved netsuke depicting a Herdboy standing with a whip in his hand, right next to his oxen that is heavily loaded with rice bails. Very nice detail and excellent golden-yellow patina. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 0.94 inches (2.4cm) wide, 1.46 inches (3.7cm) long, and 1.28 inches (3.2cm) tall. Netsuke has an age hairline, but, it is otherwise in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.

This is a museum quality example of a very rare word type from the ancient middle East.It has a hollow cast, mushroom shaped pommel and a heavy, crescent shaped guard. The blade is long and heavy with several blood grooves cast into it. There are no signs of repair or restoration to this amazing piece of ancient history. The overall length of this exquisite piece is 55 cm.

Irwin Hersey was an advisor to museums and prominent collectors, and vetted pieces for many of the international tribal art fairs and Asian art fairs.

Chinese miniature porcelain tea caddy with gold decoration. All the gold painting is intact and shows no wear which is pretty amazing. Dates mid to late 1700's, it is a fantastic little piece for the collector. In excellent condition, that is as originally made, the only imperfections are little pin pricks in the firing which is normal. This had a cork stopper which is inside the caddy. Measures 3" high x 2" wide x 1/2". Dates 2nd half 1700's.

This is pure antique Edo: Wan-shaped tea bowl made of dark, iron oxide bearing, sandy Karatsu clay. The thinly thrown body is covered with the typical white, feldspatic Shino type glaze. It differs from the Mino Shino glaze by being glossier due to a higher ash content.

Under the glaze a line was applied in iron oxide resembling the skin of a whale (kawakujira). Just the foot ring and its immediate surrounding was left unglazed. The glaze has a beautiful fine crazing...

Rare cream colored glazed Myanmar bowl with incised lotus and flared rim design circa 13th/14th CE, found at the Tak Hilltop Burial Site along the border of Burma and Thailand. I bought this about 20 years ago, now you cannot find these anymore. There are 3 repairs on the rim. Of these white wares from Burma, I have only seen one unrestored piece. D: 17.7cm/7in and H: 7.5cm/2.9in.
