A very nice lacquered papier-mache tabletop box, the cover with colorful Chinoiserie scene. The decoration depicts a noble lady and gentlemen being entertained by a troop of magicians in their garden. While two of the magicians look on, the third is juggling four balls. This is a very whimsical design that makes this box really special. The hinged lid has a lock (alas, the key is long gone)...

19th century small netsuke of a sennin (Chinese sage) mobbed by four toads. For some unexplainable (probably prophetic) reason sennin’s face looks exactly like that of Vladimir Lenin, although the netsuke is a humorous take on Gama sennin”s popularity with amphibians. Wonderful carving with great quality of facial expression and nice detailing - see the warty backs of the toads. Himotoshi (cord opening) goes under the belt on the back, old age lines...

Very unusual late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese scholar’s rock in a form of a natural mineral cluster wonderfully resembling a prickly pine tree. The stone is many-sided, providing different complete views. Beautiful object with extraordinary rich textured surface, fixed in newer fitted hardwood stand. I believe the mineral to be aragonite. Wonderful object for contemplation on scholar’s desk, beautiful patina. Height with stand 5 1/8 inches.

This is a great example of Japanese Satsuma artistry. This bowl was made and signed by Hankinzan. The bowl measures 5 inches across. It is an exceptional piece with extremely fine work. There are hundreds of detailed birds all with overglaze enamels. I also believe it was made with the thicker mercury fired gold. While this bowl looks nearly perfect, it has about a 1 inch line that goes part way down one side that is very hard to see without magnification...

For centuries, before there was electricity, throughout Asia, Puppetry Arts were a popular form of traveling entertainment... A platform with a cloth screen, lit from the back by candlelight, provided the stage.... The shadow images were black against the white "background". Hence, the puppets had a minimum of color and only the necessary intricate cut outs for personality as they were sometimes presented to the audience with the "handlers" after a performance. The various body parts of th...

An unpolished axe, made with defined seams on the edges. Well proportioned design and attractive, very broad. In Greyish brown Danien flint.

The thinbutted axes were introduced along with the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture. The axes were used to clear the woods and prepare the ground for crops. This particular axe though, would perhaps ...

Dark brown wooden netsuke of a rat on a radish, horn eyes, holding a seed between its paws.

In Japan, the term "nezumi" refers to both the mouse and the rat. They are considered the messenger of Daikokuten, the deity of trade and wealth. In the Chinese zodiac, which has been adopted by Shintoism in Japan, the rat (or mouse) is the first of the twelve animals, a position which, according to the many legends telling the story of the twelve animals and their election, is due to its cun...

These extremely rare beaded chaps are maker marked H H Heiser out of Denver, Colorado. Coming to Colorado during the Gold Rush of 1858-59, German immigrant Herman H. Heiser ultimately became one of the West's best known saddle makers. The chaps are made from brain-tanned deer hide and are beaded in what appears to be a Cheyenne pattern. There are a few small moth nips on the back side, but not serious, and merely expose the white of the original brain-tanned hide which is otherwise a uniform gr...

Simple round shape and foot with slight waist express harmony needed for the ritual.
