Ming Dynasty (1368~1615) 3-color glazed pavilion. A bright yellow roof is supported by four columns. Around each column a dragon curls from the base to the roof. This is a very attractive Japanese cloisonne vase by a rare artist. The vase is not signed but the work is very unique. A signed Goto vase with very similar work can be seen on page 79 of the book Japanese Cloisonne by Coben and Ferster. We used to own that vase and the mate that went to it. Rather unusual late 19th century (late Qing Dynasty) Chinese wooden brush rest carved in a form of a stylized rectangular section bamboo stem terminating with a peach on one end and a pomegranate on the other. Very unusual feature of two tiny elongated drawers coming out of the sides of the brush rest - probably meant for storing small items like tiny brushes or inksticks. This rare Edo period (江戸時代 1603~ 1868) silk covered accordian-fold book is hand painted on rice paper. The title and artist's seal appear on the cover. It is 9 5/8" long, 7 1/4" wide and 1" thick. The opening pages (both verso and recto) from either direction are blank, gold flaked rice paper; the end pages (bother verso and recto) are plain rice paper. Kesa was originally made from old scraps of material donated to the priests. The scraps became finer and quite luxious in time. This is a wonderful pair of early cloisonne vases. The rich enamels and designs used appear to be that of early Namikawa Sosuke. Each vase features a different roosters and a hens. The vases stand 13 inches tall. Condition overall is excellent. Upon close inspection a 1 inch line can bee seen along with two over sized pits.The owner would consider splitting up this pair.
