17C/18C Chinese Kangxi Blue and White Porcelain Charger w Silver Handle The charger is depicted in under-glazed blue with a scene from traditional Chinese opera “Romance of the Western Chamber” which is one of the most famous Chinese dramatic works; the rim with a series of lozenge patterns, mounted with a later-added silver handle; the reverse is decorated with two scrolls of flowers. This is a painted earthenware double-loop handled vase of a type generally classified as Majiayao culture (Machang style). The piece measures just under 5-1/2" inches high and is completely intact and free of repair. Exceptional root marking is visible on the surface which is painted in a series of loops and swirls. This is a large and early Buddhist applique textile, dating to no later than the mid-19th century. The design consists of a double-dorje centering a "yin-yang" emblem, representing the masculine and feminine principles of the universe.
