19th century excellently hand-carved Japanese wood netsuke depicting a Sambaso Dancer, in customary posture , standing on one leg, and garb, to include the mitrelike Okina Hat. He is carrying a Fan on his right hand. Excellent form, expression and bright colors, trademarks of Nagamichi Shuzan. It is signed Shuzan in an irregular reserve on the back of his right leg.

A pair of porcelain vases, each with globular body and tall cylindrical neck, covered with an even, dark, slightly iridescent apple-green crackled glaze. Pair of rare hanging apsaras, also known in Japanese as Kuyo Bosatsu or Hiten. The style of the face, the soft appearance of the hands, and the flowing robes are fine examples of the highest quality in Edo Period Buddhist sculpture. As for the hemp of this item, a delicate thread spun by hand is used.

The Chadougu design reached shounai by a goods-carrying merchant ship.

A Chinese porcelain water pipe made for the Imperial Palace in Hue. Decoration of dragons in cobalt blue underglaze. Below 4 characters in blue and, which is unusual, 4 other characters incised under glassure, perhaps the mark of the potter or the commander. The silver setting of very good quality is a fine example of fine goldsmith's work, it is perhaps -be Chinese but more probably Annamese. It is exceptional to find a water pipe of this quality.

A late 18th or early 19th Century Famille Rose enamelled jar made in China, probably for export, during the reign of the Jiaqing emperor. For comparison (of enamels) we have pictured two export Lion Joss Stick Holders (usually dated either late Qianlong or Jiaqing, circa 1800) in our last enlargement.
