19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with Shibayama inlay depicting Daikoku’s mallet surrounded by 9 tama (Precious Gems). The bowl is dark rosewood, the top is boxwood with carved loop on the back for the cord, materials used for inlay are black horn, silver, jadeite, pink coral and 3 different kinds of mother of pearl. 19th century wooden netsuke of a seated puppy. Wonderful piece with excellently captured facial expression and chunkiness of a young pup. Eyes are inlaid with bronze, rich dark hardwood, beautiful wear and patina. Tiny loss to 2 toes on its right hind foot, couple of nicks here and there. Height 1 5/16 inches.

A blue and white gravy jug or creamer, Chinese export porcelain, c 1830. The hand painted decoration of pagodas in a seascape is cut off on both sides of the handle, mimicking the competitive English porcelain factories, where this was an obvious downside of the new and rational method of printing. Width "5 ¼ / 13, height with handle "3 ½ / 9 cm. Condition: a glaze bubble under the spout (cf. last pic).

Hanging scroll. Various insects walking in line with luggage, simulating a lord (daimyo) traveling with his entourage to or from the capital (samurai or daimyo gyoretsu). A butterfly, suzumushi, praying mantises, yellow jackets and grass hoppers are traveling in a line, holding flowers and grasses for keyari, carrying a honeycomb for a palanquin, and berries for luggage.

Small shrine with the esoteric Buddhist figure of the Fudo Myōō who personifies Dainichi Nyorai. He is standing on a rock pedestal – symbol of his steadfastness - with a rope in his left hand and formerly with a sword in his right hand (broken off and missing). Behind him a flaming red mandorla. The patterns on his garment and his jewelry painted delicately in gold and mineral colors.
