This late 19th century Chinese ivory carving of a Smiling Buddha (Hotai) is 2 ¼ inches tall, 2 inches wide and 1½ inches deep. His eyes are inlaid horn. His head is raised up in a big smile. His left hand holds a sack; prayer beads are in the other hand. There are six children around him. A hand is missing on one of the children. Aside from that, the piece is in pretty good condition.

These bowls with matching inset lids are crafted from turn wood, and are lacquered black and red in the folk art tradition. They are intended for everyday use for soup and rice. Each has a kanji character painted in red lacquer on the lid and centers of the base. There is minor lacquer flaking here and there and usual evidence of use, but overall the condition is good. Wonderful Japanese antique incense case, made of bamboo with very highly raised lacquer in the form of a blossoming wisteria branch, beautiful color and details including a tiny wasp, signed: Shizan, Edo/Meiji Period. 12 1/2" long x 2/3" wide.

This late 19th century Chinese carved ivory Guan Yin (goddess of mercy) is 11 ½ inches tall, 2 ½ inches wide and 2 ¼ inches thick. She is standing on a double lotus base. One hand is holding prayer beads, the other is holding a lotus. The workmanship and the quality of the ivory are superb. Besides a few small hairline cracks, it is in excellent condition.

This late 19th century Chinese carved ivory statue is 8 ½ inches tall and 3 ¼ inches at its widest part. It depicts a sage sitting under a pine tree holding a teacup and a book. A young servant holds a teapot standing at his side. The seal on the bottom ¡° Great Ming, Chan Hua¡± is merely an honorific seal. It is in good condition.

Late 19th century Chinese fan shaped ivory carving with stand. One side depicts a well known battle scene from “ A Tale of the Three Kingdoms”; the other side presents an etched picture of two dragons. It is in excellent condition. It is 4 5/8 inches high (7 ¼ inches with stand), 10 ¾ inches wide and half of an inch thick.

A fine cricket cage, composed of a body made from a gourd and a base, rim and lid made of ivory. The lid itself is nicely carved to represent a bird among flowers. China, 19th century. Length: 3 1/2" (9 cm). Very good condition.

This very well carved Chinese ivory bead and green glass necklace is a 19th century product. It is 38” long and contains 78 ivory beads and one large glass bead. Originally, carved ivory beads were part of court necklaces in Qing Dynasty. The ivory beads are ½” in diameter; the glass bead is ¾” in diameter. Aside from minor wear due to its age, it is in great condition.

Globular in shape, on a nashiji gold lacquer base, the decoration represents pines and bamboo in gold and black hira maki-e, hedatsu and kirigane of vegetation at the edge of a watercourse and stylized medallions of chrysanthemums. The interior is also in nashiji. Origin: Japan. Period: Edo (1603-1868) 19th century. Height: 5.5 cm.

This late 19th century Chinese ivory statue of a bearded scholar is 5 ½ inches tall and 3 inches wide at the widest part. His eyes are half closed; he holds a scroll gently against his cheek. There are two characters read as ¡°Da Ming¡± on the bottom. The inscription means ¡°Great Ming Dynasty¡± which is quite common on ivory carvings or porcelain. There are a few hair line cracks due to the age of the piece. Over all, it is in great condition.

This late 19th century Chinese carved ivory doctor¡¯s lady is 4 inches long, 1 inch wide and 1 inch thick. Her right hand is leaning on her head and her left hand is resting on her chest. There is a dark line (the center of the tusk) running the length of her side. Her whole body has slightly yellowed due to the age of the piece. She is in excellent condition.

Old Chinese ivory figure of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, in a refined and elegant pose. The body is made out of one piece elephant ivory and finish in a term "cold painted ivory" meaning that the color is applied without any firing to fix and harden it. The even lavender-blue tone of the glass is translucent in strong light and is well-polished on the interior as well as the exterior. Up for sale is this magnificent and high class set of a tea pot and a tea container made of wood and covered in lacquer with elaborate maki-e, applied with gold designs. Both pieces of art have perfectly fitting maki-e wooden stands. This set was made at the end of the 19th century.
