This is a large doll, probably dated from Meiji to Taisho period, modeling a maiden from the Genroku era (1688-1703). Genroku culture which was the beginning of uprising power of the merchants in the Osaka area was glamorous and quite a contrast to the stiff culture of the samurai. Partially green lipstick that is shown on this doll became fashionable at the time. Her hair style is called Taka (high) Shimada or Bunkin Taka-Shimada...

This is a 19th century famille jaune brush pot with butterfly and watermelon motive incised with a feathery wave like yellow background. The butterfly symbolizes joy and felicity or to the effect meaning longevity. As for the watermelon, it does not hold any symbolic meaning. The nearest fruit that it can be compared to, is the pomegranate, because it has many seeds symbolizing offspring and posterity. This combine with the butterfly becomes very meaningful...

Here is a beautiful blue and white Chinese porcelain incense stand from the 19th century. It has two marks on it - one in the glaze and one which appears to have been applied later in red. These make great flower holders or just display it for its intrinsic beauty. Minor chips to edges.

In the mid 15th C a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the “Dragon’s Embrace.” Around 1994 local fishermen began finding pottery in their nets. This is a beautiful little round porcelain box from the now famous Hoi An shipwreck. This one is roughly 6.3 cm in diameter. It has little sea creatures still stuck to the underside - visible in the last enlargement.

Here is a great little decorated Khmer or Champa pottery pipe. This particular piece is heavily decorated with some minor damage in the form of chips to the rims and body. It measures almost 6cm in length. I currently have three of these that were all recovered by divers from the red river delta, which accounts for their pristine condition.

Gorgeous Chinese coat made all of silk with silk embroidered design of blue and white peonies, chrysanthemums and butterflies on an orange silk ground, pattern of waves and rocks along hem, sleeves of white silk embroidered with more flowers and butterflies, forbidden stitch (see detail photo), ribbon applique on sleeves and neck, lined in light blue silk, minor spots and fraying on sleeves, c. 1900. Rare pair of shrine guardians in the shape of foxes, both sitting on a two tiered elevation. The right one holds a moving jewel in its mouth, the left one a stick. Middle brown, dense wood with a beautiful patina where hands touched the backs and heads of the foxes and the bases. Red staining on inside of ears, inside the mouths, in nostrils. Crystal eyes. Bases made of the same wood...

These are very unique Japanese zuishin dolls from the late Edo period (1603-1868). The dolls are commonly called Daijin minister dolls but they are actually figures of the Toneri, the imperial guardsmen and escorts from the Heian period (794-1185). The clothing of the dolls is rich and elaborate just like Kabuki actors on stage...

Two stacks of each 5 flat boxes or trays for storing kozuka, fuchi-kashira or other small and flat objects, the tops both covered with a lid. Both stacks stand on a rectangular bottom plate, tied with a braided silk rope. Shitan (sandal wood). Meiji period, around 1900.

A seated bronze figure of Buddha in the earth-touching gesture. The Buddha sits on a platform with openwork scroll patterns. The face is round with facial features done in an free and unusual manner that give a tranquil, meditative expression.

This is a Yuan Dynasty (1227 – 1367) cizhou style vase painted in iron brown colour. There are two layer of glazing on this cizhou vase. The dark olive colour glaze can be seen at the rim of the mouth and about half an inches from the splayed foot base. It is first glazed with a dark olive green glazing and then a white layer of glaze is applied, and then the cizhou painting on it. The painting is stylized into sections...
