This exciting little piece is a grey pottery urn from the Han Dynasty of ancient China (206 BC - 220 AD). It has a plain but elegant shape with incised line decoration. The surface has light soil encrustations and traces of root fibers from extended burial. There are no signs of repair or restoration. It measures just under 13 cm in height and weighs 618 grams. A nice stout wine jug with two handles at the wide shoulders. The two handles have deliberate cuts at the tops, probably to tie rope for securing the stopper. The brownish black glaze covers the jar to about 2.5 cm from the bottom.

Period: Song (12th/13th Century)

Size: Height = 19 cm. (7.5 inches)

Condition: A couple of tiny glaze chips at the mouth's rim. The glaze is not degraded and still has a nice gloss.

This is a Han dynasty funerary pottery tripod censer of grey colour, painted with pigment. There are traces of red and white colour pigment on the body as well as on the edge. The tripod censer stands on three short pediform feet. The holes above the body and the raising of the three feet suggests that it may have been used as an incense burner. Such tripod censer in good condition is hard to come by.

This fine and incredibly ancient pottery vessel was made over 6,000 years ago during the Banpo phase (c. 4800 - 4300 BC) of the Yangshao culture in present-day Shaanxi province.
